Anyone know how TSA-approved luggage locks work?
TSA
Thousands Standing Around
Touching and Stroking Adolescents
Thieves Stealing at Airports
TSA Employee TSAE
Too Stupid for Anything Else
I think most of us have known that since shortly after Sept 11; But I have only traveled domestically since then and know the TSA is not secure. I was just trying to educate myself before I decide what dosage valium I should shoot for, if you'll pardon the expression.
“Now, that was rude.”
In China, soldiers zoomed up to me and said COME in English. They marched me into a concrete room, pointed at my suitcase, said XRAY SHOW SOMETHING then OPEN OPEN OPEN (did I mentin they all had guns out?)
So I did and they found my 230-120 volt adapter, put it back, said CLOSE then ok! And they smiled and I was on my way to Xian with only minor shock. That was rude but typical of Chinese efficiency.
The crushed lock at Denver was relatively OK.

Your comment is too funny (and all too true).
Here is a fun one for ya. I was coming home on a late flight and had to pick up a checked rifle at the baggage carousel. A guy in an army uniform was there with me and was picking up about 10 rifle cases. When he saw my case he suggested next time to use at least 4 locks so that no part of the case could be pried open. Apparently when they (whomever was shipping in the army) were only putting one lock on each end they would lose a rifle every other shipment or so. When they went from 2 to 4 locks per case the problem stopped.
Do NOT use TSA locks on your gun case. This is a misunderstood area of the law and, technically speaking, its illegal for you to do so. Per the letter of the law, as discussed in the footnotes of this article, you alone must maintain possession of the keys or combination to open your gun case. You cannot lock it in such a way that others have access. By using TSA locks on your gun case, lots of people, just about anyone in fact, technically has access to your guns. TSA locks are NOT secure and not even TSA agents are supposed to have access to your case, once cleared, without you being present to unlock the case.

Sorry for the confusion. TSA lock on my suitcase, padlock on my gun case opened only by me.
PS, they only swab tested my gun case, did not open it.
