Full Title: Bodies of 2 dead children were left in Detroit freezer for more than a year, mother in custody: police

Two children who were found dead inside a freezer in a Detroit home Tuesday, had been in the container for more than a year, police said.

Authorities found the bodies of the two children, a 14-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy, in an apartment in the city's east side, Detroit Officer Jennifer Moreno told the Daily News.

Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt told the Detroit News the bodies appear to have been in the freezer "for over a year." She lived in another apartment at the complex with her two other children, police said.

"She's been living there with other children while the bodies were in the freezer," he said. "This is a terrible situation."

The children were inside a plastic bag in the freezer, Moreno said. She declined to comment if the bodies had been dismembered.

A court officer had gone to the home Tuesday morning to conduct an eviction, she said. It was during his search of the property that he found the children, she said.

"Terrible find this afternoon," Police Chief James Craig said, according to ClickOnDetroit.Com. "It was during that eviction process that they discovered two young children in a freezer ... they were inside a bag and appeared to be frozen."

A neighbor told authorities where the mother was located, the chief said. Police did not identify a motive, the website reported.

The children's mother is in custody for questioning but no charges have been filed at this time, Moreno said. Police have identified her as a "person of interest."

The identities of the mother and the children are not being released. The cause of death will be determined by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

Moreno declined to release additional information on the investigation.

Two other children were also in the home and were transported to protective services, according to TV station WXYZ.

My neighbor’s grandson lives in Mexicantown and was out here with some NJ transplants he works with at Quicken. They were out here to do some long distance shooting.

The Jersey boys said that they had never held guns before landing in Detroit but after seeing neighbors walk around armed they lost their fear of guns.

Where did they see that, downtown or out where you live?

They all live in Mexicantown so they see armed people in their neighborhood. My neighbor’s grandson grew up here so he never had any concern about guns. Says it was one of his reasons for transferring from NY.

She was probably still getting full benefits for food stamps, rent subsidy, etc. based on four children.

That never occurred to me...

Won't be the first time a beneficiary was kept to keep the money flowing...

Being children makes it more horrific than say Granny who died and was stuffed under the mattress to keep the SS check coming...

Ha ha, that's a clever photo! Got news for you bro, if you were smart, you'd start buying up the abandoned properties as close to downtown as you can if you can find them...........but you won't!

They're being bought up by developers faster than you can post your hate Detroit comments here.............

“Some parts of Detroit are so sparsely populated that the city has difficulty providing municipal services. The city has sought and considered various solutions such as demolition of abandoned homes and buildings; removal of street lighting from large portions of the city; and encouraging the small population in certain areas to move to more populated locations. It advises them that the city cannot provide as quick response for city services such as police in depopulated areas.[64][65][66][67][68]

More than half of the owners of Detroit’s 305,000 properties failed to pay their 2011 tax bills, exacerbating the city’s financial crisis. According to the Detroit News, 47 percent of the city’s taxable parcels are delinquent on their 2011 tax bills, resulting in about $246 million in taxes and fees going uncollected, nearly half of which was due to Detroit. The rest of the money would have been earmarked for Wayne County, Detroit Public Schools and the library system. The review also found 77 blocks in Detroit had only one owner who paid taxes in 2011.[69]

What a splendid city, can we just nuke it from orbit now and be done with it?

Use Neutron Bombs please, the setting is lovely. It's just the organic life that needs to be eradicated.

No different than any other city really. You have your high crime neighborhoods and your low crime neighborhoods.

Don't think there are any "low crime" neighborhoods in Detroit.

Once again, for 2015 the big "D" is the most dangerous city in America.

Detroit's train station, Michigan Central, has become an emblem of the city. Abandoned since 1988. Failing since the 1950s.

Lots of private money going into rebuilding Detroit. The bankruptcy settlement really opened the floodgates. Creditors got prime riverfront property and have brought in architects and engineers to design luxury hotels, apartment and retail spaces. Forbes already ranks Detroit as the best riverfront in the country.

Roger Penske says he wants to create the Dubai of the midwest in Detroit. He says Show me another city where you have pro football, baseball, basketball, and hockey all withing a couple blocks. Then you have world class Indycar racing not 1 but 2 races on Belle Isle, powerboat racing, and sailboat racing on the river and air racing over it. He’s also informally lobbying F-1 to return to Detroit.

Its not abandoned. Its owned by Matty Maroun who has recently begun restorations.
