.223? Well I guess 5.56 is good then.
Shooters of 30-06 and .270 are generally happier than other people. Scientific fact.
I love these threads.
IMO this guy is being a revisionist douche bag by taking a 2015 view on many 1950-1960 cartridges that have taken more game than he ever will.
Just about everything he mentioned will still put meat in the freezer.
The .223 is a very useful cartridge and so is the .300 Weatherby Magnum.
I agree with the other 3 tho.
Yeah, everybody’s gotta be mad about something these days, right? Nifty little piece. Thanks for posting. And it didn’t stop me loving my 220 Sweet.
5.56mm
Active Duty ping.
300 WBY FTW
Dang I agree with everyone of them.
Would pick a 300WIN Mag over the 300 Weatherby MAG everyday
Agree if the Gov had not saturated the market with the 223 round it would have died. Ballistics for 223 are terrible.
270WSM....Why?
220 Swift is fun if you like to change barrels out.....22/250 will do the same job and is easier on the equipment...
Tools for jobs. Who could take a ridiculously underpowered, ancient cartridge like the 30-30 seriously? Aside from everyone who's taken a deer with it, that is. The .35 Remington? The .257 Roberts? They happen to do the job they're designed for very well, thankyouverymuch. What else is there?
Gotta agree on the 300 Weatherby magnum. The Winchester is quite good as they point out. The 44 magnum Ruger rifle is one powerful round, and similarly don’t want to shoot something you plan to eat, at close range with either one of these.
Having played with both M-16s and M-14s in Nam I’d say that it’s a choice depending on needs. If you are is a position where you have to hump ammo around in a pack you’d be better off with 5.56 because you can carry twice as much. If you have a defensive mode or some sort of vehicular support for easy resupply then 7.62 would be preferable.
Being a civilian now I’m happy because I can use my 30.06.
OK, the .223 is just right for shooting medium small game such as coyotes and with the right heavy bullets, it will do fine on hogs. At 500 yards it will out penetrate the .308.
The .300 Weatherby magnum feeds more smoothly than the .300 Winchester. It is also more powerful. The Weatherby has a longer case neck which helps in several ways. It also has the double radius shoulder which helps with that smooth feeding.
Probably the best overall combat round for the rifle is the 6.5 Carcano. Since it will never be popular due to the rough rifles it is used in, I would pick either the 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser or the old 6mm Lee Navy. You could do worse than the .243 Winchester.

I used to have a Remington 700 BDL in 6mm Remington with a nice Leupold scope. Great accurate hunting rifle that I lost in a boating accident.
if we are going to say the .458 - then we ought to be talking about the 45/70 as well....both have the ballistic trajectories of the st Louis arch. As for the .223 - Im in agreement, ..but am scratching my head on the .270 which is a pretty great round.
No the article doesn’t make me mad but it does make me laugh. Pretty much everything he states is just his opinion based on little data and even less field experience, then throw in a scoop of almost as good. My favorite rifles are my Weatherby’s, I’ve been shooting the 257, 300 and 340 longer than I suspect the author of this article has walked this earth. The 270 WSM is another good round that fills a void left from the 270 Win’s lack of case capacity. While I don’t carry my 220 Swift as much as I used to it’s an excellent varmint round and has stacked up over 200 coyotes so far. The rifle that spends the most time with me on the ranch is a 527 CZ in 223 and I don’t see it getting replaced any time soon. The one caliber that I feel is overrated that didn’t make the list should have by his own standards and that’s the 308. There’s too many 30 cal’s that shoot circles around it. It’s mediocre in both velocity and ft-lbs.
For later. Thanks.
