When Fido drags his saliva-drenched tongue across your face, man's best friend may be doing you a microbial favor as well as showing affection.
People are being recruited for a study of whether living with a canine improves the human microbiome. The study is led by University of Arizona researchers along with other universities, including UC San Diego.
"We essentially want to find out, is a dog acting like yogurt in having a probiotic effect?" said Kim Kelly, one of the study leaders, in a press release. Kelly is also a principal research specialist at the University of Arizona in the Department of Psychiatry and program coordinator for the Human-Animal Interaction Research Initiative.

I love it when *people of color* pass by our yard and see the huge black Lab......generally they quicken their pace and cross to the other side of the street. I like it. Most Labs we owned would react with tons of barking at *people of color*.
Used to be our neighborhood was besieged by Jehovahs, coming door-to-door and it was a pain in the neck. I used to open the door and let the black Lab lunge at the screen door separating us......saying something like *I’m not sure I can control the dog....please leave* .....and they would hot-foot it off the porch. ‘Nuff said. After a while they stopped coming. Heh.

Don't know if you're being facitious, but I've actually wondered about that since dogs lick their rears so often. Still, don't think I've ever gotten sick by letting my dogs lick my face.

Someone gave me a rainbow lori that makes kissing noises - he also humps everything in sight, even strawberries, the little pervert. And he’s got a beak like a razor blade.
He’s so obsessed and aggressively horny the female lori I adopted in the hopes of normalizing him is scared of him and refuses to have anything to do with him, so I can’t put them together. She’s perfectly normal and laid back but he’s a nutcase.
They’re Rainbow Lorikeets.
We get them mostly around the East Coast of Australia, everywhere.
I used to regularly feed them, not anymore (very messy). Though they still visit, demanding food. Very animated, very noisy, very intelligent, and even wild ones (never had them as pets) can be very affectionate, easily domesticated. But mostly don’t like to be touched by humans, though sit on your head, shoulder, arms or hand when you feed them.
Yep, that’s Loris. Distinct personalities and very intelligent. They can get attached to humans very quickly.
Given their weird tongues those kisses could be interesting.
I’m getting ready to build mine an aviary; I’ve been told they aren’t destructive of plantings as most birds are so I’ve got bottlebrush bushes to put in it, since they love the nectar and like to use the leaves to groom themselves like some kind of avian wash rag. I guess I’ll soon find out if the bushes will get shredded up or not.

They can & do actually kiss each other (male and female). But in the 2nd pic I posted I’d say a parent is feeding. Can look like kissing :)
