Maybe it's dialectical. There are many different dialects in Germany.

Hey, all you native German speaking Freepers--is the umlaut-O every pronounced like "ay" in English? Help!

We weren’t talking about the umlaut “o” but we were talking about the “oeh” pronunciation.

I went to school with someone named Stoehr. They pronounced their name “Stay-er,” but sometimes it sounded like “Stair.”

Who knows?
