Posted on 03/13/2015 12:27:32 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Our temperature here in Missouri is at a nice 48 degrees. We are into our 2cnd day of rain. It's been a nice week and we have concentrated on clean up and preparing for the gardening season.

Hope you are all doing well. Have a great weekend, and God Bless.

Hubby drained and cleaned the swimming pool, since he never got around to covering it up last fall. My lemon tree has 10 new lemons - pea size and marble size mostly.

Hubby has started about 100 pepper seeds - California Wonders. I have a few more tomatoes ready for transplant into 4 inch pots or styro foam cups.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The maintenance man took the bananas before they were fully ripe. Grrrrr.

Best part of my week! Looking forward to this weekend - I've got TONS of plants that are ready for transplant. Last weekend, I was able to put together a smaller greenhouse out of PVC and 3mil plastic from the Wally World - extended my growing season by upwards of 2 months, all for under $20.

I've been researching State and Federal regs, and it looks like I'm going to kick my growing into high gear so as to have plenty of extra to take down to the local farmers market this spring. Found out I can even sell my extra tobacco plants. As long as I don't sell any perennials/biennials, State Dept. of Ag doesn't regulate "greenhouse" stock, only "nursery" stock (trees, shrubs, sod/turf grass, etc.).

At this point, I've got 3 or 4 varieties of tomato, a number of squash types, 4 or 5 tobacco varieties (I'm calling the stuff I got from JRandomFreeper "Nicotiana Free Republica" - HA!), including Virginia Gold, Burley, Havana Gold, N. Rustica and a "Lite" variety. I've just got to get a bunch of annual flowers and such growing at this point, and I'll be ready for farmer's market!

They aren’t actually MY bananas...They grow on the property.

However...I was hoping to snag a few before they got “taken”.

I shall have to be more “vigilant”. LOL

The last paragraph was mysteriously chopped off of my original post. Friday the 13th mystery I guess. LOL

Hope all is well; have a great weekend, and God Bless.

I like growing tomatoes in pots - especially the cherry/salad types.

A little rain today in DFW area. No complaints though—except too wet for soil turning. Started a few tomato and pepper plants by seed last month. Lets see how these slow pokes develop. Might have to buy a few plants as well. Going with more greens this season. Trying escarole by seeds— first time in decades. Italian grandma used to make her escarole with chick peas—mangia. ‘sca-rol-a’ she called it. She’s cooking it up there in heaven now.

After a lot of research I’ve decided to go biointensive this year. Anybody here garden this way?

Sounds like a good plan. I love going to farmers markets. Too bad our climate doesn’t allow for year round farmers market.

We are planning on an exploratory visit to Costco in St. Louis this weekend to pick up stuff that is not available in our rural grocery stores.

Hi all - the weather has been delicious here in the Piedmont of NC. The air was particularly fine yesterday. I’ve been growing some seedlings (tomatoes and flowers) and rooting some cuttings that I took during class a couple of weeks ago. It’s been exciting to see them grow.

I haven’t done anything outside except raking up leaves and bagging them. Still have so much to do to improve the appearance of my father’s house. I’ve just peeked at my plants from last year - most are covered with mulch or branches from the Christmas tree.

Last week in class we learned about pruning and how to select and grow fruit trees. I really have no interest in growing fruit trees (at this time). Every week there is something new to learn and I’m looking at things so differently. As soon as the ground dries out around here I’m going to take soil samples and get those sent off in April. I feel like I’m so far behind the curve that I’m really just going to set my sights on establishing a lawn in the back and front yard this year, deal with the drainage problems and doing clean up on the property. I have some roses coming in May and will have to move things around a bit to fit them into my Mom’s (deceased) garden.

I’m looking forward to gaining in wisdom and knowledge this year.

Part four of the seed starting article from Eric's local paper:

http://www.thelaketoday.com/news/2015/mar/11/how-start-seeds-part-4-transplanting-seeds-how-whe/

I retrieved the Red Menace from the diesel doctor over lunch today, so I'll be able to make a materials run to the lumberyard tomorrow AM. If all goes well the cold frame will be up and running by the end of the weekend.

It has been raining here for the last few days and the forecast for the next week or so includes rain or a chance of rain. Mrs. RD and I bought a new car on Monday. A 2015 Ford Focus with EcoBoost (fancy name for a Turbocharger - to help the small engine have some power). It is for her 65 mile round trip to work. It replaces an aging 2002 Buick. She loves her new car. I have driven it once to the grocery store and it is nice, but has a very complicated computer driven instrument cluster. She is still reading the instruction manual. Some day we may understand all the features it offers.

endive and radicchio

Green eyes, green thumbs, green plants and green salads. Conservatives going green--literally. We just don't make it our religion. ('

I do somewhat, but not totally, because I don’t care for starting seeds, and transplanting. But I do try to plant some plants for their composting, and I do use some spaces year round.

I also plant everything in raised beds or containers, and quite close in the beds to choke out the weeds. I have several books on the Biointensive Methods which I purchased from Bountiful Gardens.

Their booklet “FOOD FOR THE FUTURE, A Survival Garden Plan” is a pretty neat plan for a complete diet, and small 100 sq. foot starter garden, which can be easily be expanded to provide more if needed.
