The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Although radicchio is kinda reddish.
Surely you will grow those tomato seedlings won’t you?
We are interested in growing fruit trees and berries, but don’t have a lot of luck yet, because Hubby planted most of them too close to the Walnut tree.
When we get older, and less able to garden, we are hoping to have plenty of fruit, nuts, and berries to harvest without the spring planting hassle. Have to beat the birds and critters though! LOL
We have mostly small birds, and continue to encourage wrens.
I really like the looks of that cold frame. Hope to see a picture of the final product to show my Hubby. Thanks for the link to the article.
I never did find a lemon tree or lemon grass last year so green with jealousy.
Finally got some seeds into pots and most are up despite being stomped on by the kitties. It’s 73 with occasional sun so opened the windows and the back door for the four leggers to come and go and was presented with two presents yesterday - a snake and a baby rabbit. Hubby disposed of the snake and took the rabbit in the opposite direction of where they roam. Hey, as long as they keep the snakes out of my garden.
Speaking of pets, we have finally taken the dogs off Purina and Pedigree because they did nothing but chew themselves down to bloody flesh. The vet kept saying fleas forever but I knew that wasn’t the problem. The past week or so, I’ve been feeding them rice with canned cat food (9 Lives fish and chicken) and table scraps and the chewing has all but stopped so they’re more relaxed and happier. One’s hind end has completely cleared up and fur looking better and the other is showing great improvement on a huge raw spot. Just saying what with all the dog food being in the news.
I’m making sure to include a Red Radicchio for visual interest. LOL
Rural, Conservative folk are just naturally “green” - Isn’t that where the name Conservation came from? LOL
We are also smart enough to know that electric cars, at a time when much of our electricity is provided from coal, is not really that “green”.
The new cars think they will impress us if the instrument panel resembles the Space Shuttle! LOL!
I thought Pedigree was supposed to be a good brand? I have been wondering about it. My doggie has been on Pedigree for ever, but recently seems to have lost weight, in spite of additional ration.
So I have been wondering if they changed the formula or started making it in China or something. Was thinking about switching brands or changing to cat food too.
We have little ones too, including finches and hummingbirds.
And butterflies...big ferocious butterflies that travel in gangs! LOL!
That sounds like me and my cell phone. I get the simplest, and cheapest model, and still haven’t learned all the features. Yet, Hubby continues to bring his phone(same model) to me and ask me how to do stuff.
I’m too techno challenged to have a “smart” phone. LOL
LOL. Pretty gangs no doubt!
They are, indeed!
I’ve been buying quite a bit online - seeds via Amazon & ebay. So far, I’ve had good luck with all of it. As for selling my stuff @ farmers market, I’m planning on sticking with weird, out of the ordinary stuff - like the ghost and carolina reaper chile seeds I’ve got sprouting @ the moment. If it’s offbeat, something you don’t see on the Burpey rack at wally world, I’m in! Lol.
As soon as the big freeze is for-sure over, I'm setting out peanuts up front as ornamentals/getting rid of grassburrs. That may be the extent of my new gardening this year. I'll just live on the existing stuff that is out there. And there seems to be lots of it. ;)

My Golden has been doing that. Started him a while back on PetsBarn Salmon Oil. 3 Tablespoons at each meal. He eats Appetito Blue. American made. Has corn in it but not a lot. I also took him off all treats made outside the USA. This weekend I will make him some cheese and veggie snacks.
The 2015 gardening season is upon me. Year 3 and hopefully it will be a charm. Saw something in my garden which I haven’t seen in 2 years. BEES!!! I am taking that as an omen.
In my two 4x4’s I have, Rosemary in its second year. Cannot touch it without my hands smelling for 2 days. Put in Basil, Italian Parsley, Oregano, Thyme and will get some seeds in the ground tomorrow.
In the other 4x4 I have two types of tomatoes, jalapeno, artichokes, lettuce and spinach. Tomorrow I will put in a cherry tomato plant and cannot decide on cucumber of zucchini.
Depending on funds, I might build another 4x4 just for flowers. Also considering a fruit tree and possibly a berry bush. Anyone in the San Antonio area have any recommendations?
Absolutely! I will grow those tomatoes. Just no big plans as yet to get a big garden growing.
My English peas are up!
Tall Telephone, Burpee Perfection and Little Marvel.
They’re a week late, but now that they’re up I hope they’ll catch up soon. I need to get them picked before the hot and humid days (and nights) start, around the mid to end of May.
I’m transplanting all my broccoli and lettuce this weekend into their permanent beds.
As long as you're going to STL, you might have a look at the Home Depot on Watson Rd. at Lindbergh (direct exit from I-44, exit 286 as I recall. 2 minutes from exit). Pretty darn good garden shop and, of course, just dandy if you need stuff for building.
I've gotten my seeds and specialty fertilisers there for years and years.
Happy troweling...heh heh heh.
Yeah! One of her co-workers showed her how to link her cell phone to the car (Blue Tooth) and all she has to do is speak my name or any name she has saved on her phone and it shows up on one the screen and dials that phone. All hands free. Also has the camera when shifted into reverse which shows what is behind the car.
Here in west Michigan it been glorious, in the low 50’s all week and plenty of sunshine. A lot of the snow is gone.
Hubby found this link and I wanted to share it, for those who would like to try beekeeping, a truly amazing breakthrough in beekeeping. It was a recent news story on yahoo this week. It’s a hive box with a built in extraction system. You don’t have to open the hive to get the honey, just open a spigot and put a jar underneath. Really amazing. It’s at www.honeyflow.com
