This happened to me yesterday. 3/11/15 at Olive Garden.
Our debit card has a daily limit-which is good, I guess. Last time at Sam’s Club we had to keep having the clerk take things back until we were under the limit. I felt so dumb, but at least I know that even with a PIN there is only so much per day that could be stolen.
We have never had 5 figures in our checking so a 3 figure limit is a very good thing for us :)
They may tell you that you have the same protection, but I will guarantee you that you it will be a much bigger hassle.
Again... part of this is what customer selected non-PIN transaction caps are about. You don’t have to choose between don’t use the card at all for the purpose, and leaving tens of thousands plus naked for the vacuuming pending fraud resolution.
We’re conservatives aren’t we? We believe that there are valid risk reward trade offs don’t we?
Well, you know,, I didn’t ask you to critique my food choices. I was trying to do a service to let you all know. Mr. Peter, if you don’t need the info, fine. But I am happy with my culinary choices and will continue to eat there, if I so choose.
It so happens that I can’t eat just any old thing right now and I wanted portobello mushroom ravioli and McDonald’s just doesn’t serve it. Darn!
Good point.. true. These days the purpose of my main checking account is pretty much just to support the debit card... I pay bills out of other accounts and I generally only keep a couple hundred dollars in the checking account at a time in order to minimize exposure.
sams club sells their dressing and croutons - makes for a killer salad with some extra goodies - the rest is nasty anglotalian goop
Always use a credit card.
....and a dedicated $500 limit card at that
Well, FR has a tendency to descend into Snob City from time to time.
If Olive Garden gets people talking, I’d like to hear it about Fazolis (duck’n & runn’n!) — now that is more like the Burger King of Italian eats.
VISA and MC do offer some additional protections, but I would make certain that you understand. They absolutely don’t have to offer the same legal protections. For example
Federal law caps your liability at $50 if you report your debit card lost or stolen within two days. After two days, your liability jumps to $500, and waiting more than 60 days after your statement is sent to report unauthorized charges could leave you on the hook for the entire amount of the loss. By comparison, your liability in the event of unauthorized credit card charges tops out at $50.
For me, its just not worth the risk. I would rather get the reward points anyway and pay it off every month.
best wishes
That’s for lost or stolen card... how about for account number jacked?
OTOH, this can keep your account from being overdrawn, which is nice. Perhaps they can only see an amount up to the value of the check.
I don’t know. I just don’t take the chance. As crazy as it sounds, Ive actually been a part of a bank that requires customers to look at their accounts on a daily basis to look for fraud. That is somewhat common for corporate account. I don’t know what the consumer’s responsibility is in this case.
i only use my debit card at my bank... then cash everywhere else. on rare occasions i will use a credit card for larger purchases.
another tidbit largely unknown by the public....
any funds deposited via direct deposit can be withdrawn as an ‘accounting error’ ... with no time limit. a company i knew did this to their employees. they pulled a few paychecks and immediately declared bankruptcy. the people were out the cash with no recourse.
this is why i recommend never doing direct deposit.
btw, here’s a tip for those stuck on the road and having to use a credit card in restaurants.
always figure the tip so the total bill ends in the same 2 digits.
ie:
your special code - 77
—
bill total - $10.52
tip - $ 2.25 (20% plus fudge factor to get to your special digits)
total including tip - $12.77
this allows you to glance down your credit card statement and quickly spot the items of interest
Don't use a debit card. Period. They are inherently insecure and it's not worth the occasional convenience.
You are correct. But....
Those rules vary depending on your state, your banks affiliation, and specific rules set by the bank.
I urge everyone to check with their bank and get the policy in writing. And check every year to make sure they haven’t changed.
Reading bank policies is like eating chalk, but it might open eyes.
Prayers for your health. Don’t let this nonsense get you too worked up !
Their lunch special (unlimited soup and salad) is actually quite good. (Until I tried it, I would have agreed with you.)
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll take your advice ASAP.
