After Shaking Hands With People We Like To Sniff Our Hands: Thanks, Chemosignals
Medical Daily ^ | 3-4-2015 | Anthony Rivas

Anyone who’s ever seen two dogs interacting with each other knows they love sniffing each other’s butts. Why? Because their powerful noses are able to pick up loads of information, including the other dog’s gender, diet, and emotional state. Dogs aren’t the only ones to behave this way; rats and primates do as well, including humans, according to a new study. And when it comes to the way we do it, you may have never even noticed it.

The study, from researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, found that many of us sniff our hands after a handshake, and suggested it could be because we’re checking out their scents. In fact, they found the average number of seconds a person spent smelling their hands nearly doubled after shaking another person’s hand when compared to smelling their own hand for the sake of it.

“It’s well known that germs can be passed on through skin contact in handshakes, but we’ve shown that potential chemical messages, known as chemosignals, can be passed on in the same manner,” said Idan Frumin, a research student at the Institute, in a press release. It’s hard to believe that our hands would unconsciously move up to our noses for a sniff following a handshake (we’re just scratching our noses, right?), but whether it was immediately after or once that person left the room, sniffing increased by over 100 percent.

Brodie: After all he’s done to you, you should still kinda stick it to him.
T.S. Quint: How do you propose I do that?
Brodie: You stinkpalm him.
T.S. Quint: Stinkpalm?
Brodie: You take your hand and stick it in your ass like this. You been walkin’ all day and you’re nervous, so no doubt you’ll be sweaty as hell.
T.S. Quint: You should see yourself right now, a grown man with his hand down his pants.
Brodie: Yeah i probably look like my old man. So you shake hands with the guy, “Hello Mr. Svenning how have you been?”
T.S. Quint: Whats the point?
Brodie: You know how long it takes for that smell to come off? Scrub all you want, it’ll stick around for at least two days. How does he explain it to his colleagues and family? They’ll think he doesn’t know how to wipe his ass properly.
T.S. Quint: Meanwhile you yourself are left with a hand that smells like shit.
Brodie: Small price to pay for the smiting of one’s enemies.

Yeah, what is funny is all the people denying they do this seem to have missed the point that it seems to be an unconscious behavior, so of course they are not aware they are doing it.

I caught myself doing just this the other day because a workman from my job shook my hand, and I noticed a weird scent, like he had been melting tar or something. I hadn’t consciously decided to sniff my hand, but once I smelled the odd scent I noticed that I was doing just that, as soon as he left the room.

I never have either. It must be a part of Mid Eastern culture since the study was done in Israel.

If, by “sniff” they mean “wash vigorously with copious amounts of soap” then yes, yes I do. :)

This video study of dating-age adult men and women interacting at a “bar” mixer set up by the researchers will educate and creep you out with all the body language indicators that we men are clueless about.

I don’t think we are clueless about them, just not very consciously aware of them. We must be aware of them on some level, or they wouldn’t have any effect, and women wouldn’t be using them.

Uh, no, I’m with you, Zed. I’ve been in too many restrooms and watched guys walk out of the can, straight out the door.

Then there’s that Seinfeld episode where Poppie makes the pizza “witha my owna handsa.”

Why are so many of you shaking hands with people so scummy you need to wash them afterwards?

I don’t shake hands with gross or scummy people.

Hell, I never really encounter such people.

I don’t shake hands but for once every couple years or so and would certainly not sniff my hands afterward. More like douse in 91% isopropyl alcohol.

I do not like a woman that is dirty in the sense of poor hygiene, stink is stink and I do not like it. A woman that smells of all her natural odors is wonderful and I am sure Laz would agree.
