There’s a glaring contradiction in NFL’s Deflategate timeline ['Ballghazi' Pats' sting?]

The Deflategate controversy took another strange turn Thursday when Colts general manager Ryan Grigson revealed he had alerted the NFL the week before the AFC Championship Game about concerns the Patriots were underinflating footballs.

Grigson’s revelation, which came during a press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, appeared to contradict league officiating director Dean Blandino’s strong denial the NFL had conducted a “sting” of New England during the title game.

“Earlier in that week, prior to the AFC Championship Game, we notified the league about our concerns,” Grigson told reporters Thursday. “We went into the game, we had some issues.

“I’m not going to get into specifics,” Grigson added, deferring to the NFL’s ongoing investigation by Manhattan attorney Ted Wells. “Hopefully everything can come out, and everybody will be able to have a clear look at the situation.”

Grigson’s revelation would seem to indicate the NFL had advance knowledge and was trying to catch the Patriots in the act during the first half of the title game, and when Mike Kensil, a former Jets executive who is now the league’s director of football operations, weighed New England’s supply of balls again at halftime.

Asked during Super Bowl week by The Post if the NFL was running a sting on the Patriots, Blandino said: “I don’t know where [the idea of a sting] came from. This was a problem that came up in the first half.”

Possibly backing up Blandino’s assertion is the fact the NFL did not log the weights of the Patriots’ footballs before the game.

My question is, what's the standard deviation of weight for a deflated football (just the leather, no air)? How much does it change with moisture and humidity? And how does that compare with the weight of air that's in the ball?

From what I've seen in two minutes of intense web research, an inflated football weighs roughly 14 to 15 ounces. Here's a more detailed analysis, which estimates the weight of air in a football at a pressure of roughly 13 PSI at 9.67 g. That means that if the footballs are underinflated by 10% above atmospheric (5% absolute), the football weight would be lower by roughly 0.5 grams.

So, if the football weighs something over 400 grams, what is the expected deviation of the football's weight by manufacture, and by environmental change?

Link: NFL Football Weight Calculation

That's not to say that it does seem odd that ALL of the deviations were on the low side. However, the Colts are sore losers, and the Pats won the SB without deflated balls, if just barely.

The question could be relevant IF...
...the officials failed to weigh the Colts' footballs...

'Cause if they DID weigh the Colts' footballs as well, then to have all 12 Colts' footballs in sync -- and almost 90% of the Pats' footballs out of sync...

...that'd be difficult to pin the blame on the manufacturer -- assuming both teams get their balls from the same source. Right?

I agree, absent other facts. In my post I did say it would be odd for only the Pats' statistics to vary on the downside.

Whether deliberate deflation, with all of the videos around is the answer, or there's some other explanation, I don't know.

NFL has become professional wrestling in shoulder pads. Except pro wrestlers take fewer steroids and don’t get arrested as often.

Amnesty for illegals, ISIS on the march, Obama taking over the Internet, the country coming apart at the seams, and there are still those out there worried about this so-called “deflate gate” BS?

Seriously?

This has been my assertion from the beginning...the NFL officials responsible for validating the footballs before the game neglected to do so, or at the very least, did not document the results of any such efforts. Thereby negating anything anyone may have believed or alleged about the inflation status of any football used in that AFC Championship game. The fault lies with the NFL officials for not doing their job.

“assuming both teams get their balls from the same source.”

I don’t think you could just assume that, and if they did you couldn’t assume it was the same production run. Were talking about 17 thousands of an Oz here...

(Exactly! What are you doing commenting on this chat thread, anyway?

And why then -- if what you say is so "seriously" so...did you waste your time commenting on this other sports thread 3 days ago?

1980 'Miracle on Ice' U.S. Olympic hockey team reunites in Lake Placid: Post #4

Or "who cares" -- in light of your sober list -- about the Oscars? (Yet you found time to comment on that)

Or why your numerous posts a few days back on some ancient coins found in Israel?

And I'm sure if we searched last week, all month, January...we could find LOTS of July4thFreedomFoundation posts on "trivial" matters beyond ISIS, Obama, & the country falling apart at the seams.

And yet you presume to don your pulpit and preach against trivial pursuits?

Seriously?

Just another reason to hate the Colts - too bad Andrew Luck (good guy) landed on a schmucky team that will never provide him with:
a) a good O-line for protection, and/or
b) a decent defense so he doesn't have to carry the team like Payton did.

What is the airspeed velocity of an underinflated football?

What do you mean, an AFC or an NFC football?

What? I don’t know that.

Sorry, I was on a roll.

The Final Score was 45-7. A superball couldn't have helped the hapless Colts.

Am I the only red blooded American dude whose had it up to here with the NFL scandals and watergate moments and wants them to for the love of all that I good and decent just get back to playing football?

Maybe it’s just me.

Why would they be trying to catch the Pats in the act? Why not just properly inspect the balls and make sure they’re inflated properly? That would be the goal of a GM “expressing concern”, making sure the refs do their job. Which the latest leaks (no record of inflation at inspection time) say they didn’t.

Come to think of it, there have been several NFL arrests since the end of season, hasn’t there?

Not a Colts' fan...

Are you telling us, tho, if a Democrat wins a primary, say 45,000 votes to 7,000 votes, and had dead voters, and repeat voters aiding that sweep into office, we are simply to ignore the dead voters & repeat voters...and move right along...saying a "supervote" couldn't have helped the hapless Dem primary opponent?

In 2014, 28 NFL players were arrested/cited in the off-season, not including speeding.
