“Dogs are just fascinating,” Santos said. “We love them, they live in our homes. Anyone who hangs out with a dog is kind of wondering, ‘what are they thinking, do they love me’."

certainly the pooches are smarter than many of their liberal arts professors

(except for the occasional dog that gets eaten at the White House)

I think dogs are telepathic. My dog always seems to know what I intend to do before I do it.

Mine, too. Well, one of them anyway. She seems to know whether I'm going to let them out, give them a treat, go for a ride etc before I make any moves. She's right about 90% of the time.

As for my other dog, he's a big lovable googball but not the brightest creature on earth, LOL!

No wonder Muslims hate dogs. Like in that Twilight Zone episode,

“The devil’s fooled a lot of people but even he can’t fool a dog!”

My dog loves TV, the Dog TV channel, will get up from his rug and bark at four legged animals, (people are O.K.). If we say dog he will whirl around and see if there is a dog in a commercial (there are lots of them) and bark and leap at the TV. The Budweiser commercial was different. He did a whimper bark when the pup was in danger.

We have got to get a picture/short video of him doing this.

There is NOTHING on this Earth more fear inspiring than a small dog!

I was walking my German Shepherd, a fearless squirrel terminator, living tissue over metal endo-skeleton, down the street of my neighborhood one day when, all of a sudden as we passed this roadside bush next to a mailbox, this 5 lbs. barking cerberus made itself known.

My fearless shepherd literally teleported behind me. The move was so fast that her leash remained in its original position sans dog for about a good 3 seconds before time actually caught up with my teleporting shepherd, and her leash magically returned to her collar behind me.

Luckily, the owner of the cerberus hound came and rescued us, otherwise we surely would have been doomed.

Little dog is boss, that is all.

I don’t know what it is - it’s weird. She’s strong, but not that strong.

That being said, when I was a boy, I had a dachshund who was attacked by a huge shepherd/lab mix from next door (who had killed two other stray dogs and a couple of cats) He jumped the fence into our yard.

My girl curled up in a ball (phalanx style) and took one bite in the side from the enemy (a few stitches fixed her right up). I was running toward both of them when I saw my dog lash out - quick as a flash, and popped out the other dog’s eye - which she ate.

He ran away, never came back and the owner never said a word. She also saved my mother while she was gardening one day by killing a copperhead - grabbed it before my mother even saw it, shook it, and took off it’s head...which she didn’t eat.

I’ve always had dachshunds ever since...or rather they’ve had me.

A big question is would it be possible to “force evolution” for dogs?

There are any number of improvements that could be made to canines, that would give people more of what we enjoy in dogs.

1) Longer, healthier lives.
2) Greater intelligence. Eventually learning how to communicate several ideas.
3) The ability to indicate that they have pain or discomfort, and “where it hurts”.
4) To be able to let us know that they sense important things we cannot.
5) The ability to voice communicate with each other.

We have a smooth haired Dachschund and we race her every year at the annual weinerdog races in Buda Texas.

I once lived in a rough part of town, and to keep things even, I had a large rottweiler "Duke" and a chainlink fence so they could all see him. We had lots of section 8 apartments nearby, thus lots of human debri walking around. I have lots of stories, but one good story is when I went to the local convenience store and saw half of the apartment complex inside the store loitering. So..

I backed up my truck directly in front of the exit door with Duke sitting in the back. When the feral canine-aphobe urban folk inside realized they were trapped, they did everything to make sure I left without a hitch. I was allowed to go to the head of the line. One lady asked, "do he bite?". I replied, "lets hope not", to which she was not pleased. However, she was wise enough not to raise a hand to me.

Our dog is racist!! Seriously, when we have people come to the front door (sales) she’ll growl and bark - but only if they’re black!! I can’t explain it, I always treat them the same. Thing is, she’s totally harmless!! One (very large) guy saw the dog and said “whoa” and stepped back five feet...which is generally a good thing, but I could only think, “if only you knew” lol.

She’s going on 14, quite the princess in general - my wife spoiled her.
