I was thinking about selling my arm knit infinity scarves on Etsy. I've discovered I need to get a fed tax ID number, register my business with my state (Ohio), create a sales tax payment account on the state's tax site, get a vendors license, and potentially charge and pay local sales tax. All this for what I'd consider my "egg money"? If you sell on Etsy or know somebody who does, could you share the experience?
What about eBay instead? When I go online shopping, I usually turn there first. Only go to Etsy if eBay doesn’t pan out. Is it the Etsy website that was requiring all the govt stuff, or did you find that out as a result of your own research? Maybe eBay wouldn’t rat you out to The Man. ;o)
What is the link to Eytsy?
I buy on etsy. Just commissioned 9 more fine knit iphone purses for a hundred bucks plus. I have them for every outfit so my phone is by my side even when I’m at home, wearing women’s fashion created without pockets because women don’t apparently need them? Bull, all you gay fashion designers.
There are a ton of cool things on etsy.
I have bought a ton of baby things and cloth diapering things.
Go for it; I hope you’re a big success!
Can’t you just throw them up on ebay or something?
They also have a nasty tendency to take your listings down without checking to see if complaints have validity.
Someone says they designed the pattern you are selling and it is your job to prove that they are lying.
Did so and then told eBay to shove it.
Unless something has changed, eBay/PayPal reports to the IRS after 20k sales (per year)
The only "ratting out" has been done by PayPal via the 1099K form, and that's only for gross receipts over $20K per year AND over 200 transactions. eBay has a history of fighting the requirement on the basis that it's the seller's responsibility to address any tax issues associated with their activities, not theirs.
I would try ebay first. Lots of craft sellers on ebay.
I think eBay has come and gone for small sellers. It’s been around too long and has turned much more mainstream and toward bigger businesses.
Yes that is correct. But I did not have to fill out all kinds of paperwork on ETSY. I do believe they report sales to the IRS. I only sold one item. It was around $12 and it wasn’t anyone from WI. My expenses ended up to be more than the profit LOL!
