Good stuff but my plan is to LEAVE. Have a line of retreat and the means to get there prepared at all times.
Respectfully suggest other FReepers do the same if possible.
Oh yeah, he did talk about that. Was just emphasizing. Good points in the article for those who don’t bug out early enough or have no line or retreat, too.
I already live in a rural area.
I don’t think my neck of the woods is expecting a large influx of people any time soon.
I quickly scanned/read the article and I didn’t see communications mentioned...at all. It has never been easier to earn your Ham License and entry level radios start around $30.00
When the electric grid goes down, everything stops! No electricity, no refrigeration, no gas pumps working, no natural gas pressure.
When the water towers empty, no pumps to refill, no sewage pumps working, when the cars run out of gas...plugged highways, no trucks bringing food into the cities.
Expect an outbreak of diseases like you have never seen, no drinking water, must drink from the gutter and sewer.
Then things will get really bad when the welfare cards fail to work.
Think of how it will be if all this fails in WINTER or the heat of SUMMER!
People will swelter in the heat making short tempers, and in winter they will then burn anything made of wood to keep warm.
When do you think the chaos will start?
It's very good.
Easily prepared for six months here and adding more month by month. We have a very diverse group that lives here that compliments each others skills and abilities. We take nothing for granted though. We still need to finalize our communication plan.
I have to disagree. Unless there is a biologic, nuclear, or natural catastrophe at your doorstep staying put is your best bet. Let’s be honest here.
How many of us can claim we are in superior physical fitness to outrun an angry hungry mob of refugees while we carry 400 lbs of rifles and ammunition?
How many roads are available to nether-regions that 90% of our towns plan on evacuating to if TSHTF? How many cars can travel the same distance on 1 tank of gasoline?
Is it more likely to have a steady supply of water in a small municipality catastrophe that recovers 5 days after calamity or find a fresh supply of unguarded well water on rural property?
Can you carry enough ammo, food, and firearms to reclaim property from an occupying defensive force?
Are you willing to die for a scratch of land with your corn and potatoes or willing to wait in line for some MREs from the local civil defense force?
Unless you are already in your cabin in the woods with a full supply of sundries and ammo you are stuck in a suburb like I am. In my opinion it is best to make your life as unassuming as possible and stockpile your goods in a defensible house.
I live alone with a newly adopted dog (God bless him, a McNab cattle dog sweet as can be). On our own property we are a force to be reckoned with. On the road to some cabin in the woods where a million people will be heading to (I live in Sandpoint Idaho half the year and Kailua Oahu Hawaii the rest of the year) we are someone’s dinner.
I am always leery of most survivalist advice. Most of it assumes way too much.
I live in a small town in the Southwest and have a cousin with a ranch several miles away in the boondocks. The whole extended family plans to converge on that ranch in the event of a situation where armed patrols will be required and survival will be the priority. My enclosed trailer has my music gear in it but I won’t take long to unload that and load it with food, water, firearms, ammo, and bivouac stuff.
Failure of Civility.

Most are jobs that would require maybe thirty minutes of training.
Which is why I sometime wonder at the people who want only those who have "skills" in their group.
Lots of willing hands attached to warm bodies is going to be the biggest need so if you have a choice between lazy sullen skilled and hardworking willing unskilled take the unskilled.
They can be taught what is necessary.
I’m in NYC, which is pretty much the worst place to be if the SHTF. But thankfully there are plans in place to get people out if need be. Selfishly, I’m one of the few with guns around here. Most will be too occupied with looting to be thinking long term. We’ll pretty much be flying by the seat of our pants. Thankfully I have training.
