How Climate Change Leads to Volcanoes (Really)
Time Magazine ^ | January 29, 2015 | Jeffrey Kluger

Posted on 01/30/2015 12:16:51 PM PST by CedarDave

Give climate change credit for one thing: it’s endlessly versatile. There was a time we called it global warming, which meant what it said: the globe would get warmer. It was only later that we appreciated that a planet running a fever is just like a person running a fever, which is to say it has a whole lot of other symptoms: in this case, droughts, floods, wildfires, habitat disruption, sea level rise, species loss, crop death and more.

Now, you can add yet another problem to the climate change hit list: volcanoes. That’s the word from a new study conducted in Iceland and accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters. The finding is bad news not just for one comparatively remote part of the world, but for everywhere.

Iceland has always been a natural lab for studying climate change. It may be spared some of the punishment hot, dry places like the American southwest get, but when it comes to glacier melt, few places are hit harder. About 10% of the island nation’s surface area is covered by about 300 different glaciers—and they’re losing an estimated 11 billion tons of ice per year. Not only is that damaging Icelandic habitats and contributing to the global rise in sea levels, it is also—oddly—causing the entire island to rise. And that’s where the trouble begins.

In the new paper, investigators from the University of Arizona and the University of Iceland analyzed data from 62 GPS sensors that have been arrayed around Iceland—some since as long ago as 1995, others only since 2006 or 2009. But all of the sensors told the same story: Iceland is rising—or rebounding as geologists call it—by 1.4 in. (35 mm) per year.

Don't know how anyone missed this stunning piece of crap science. I'm a graduate of the U of AZ but ashamed of their current research. When I was there they studied ways to increase water retention in a desert environment and breeding drought resistant plants. But to keep the government money flowing they have to make any type of scientific observation (in this case Iceland surface rising) as a result of manmade climate change. I guess we should just call them science whores who will publish anything for cash.

I totally agree.

Shaking my head. If they said it was a bicentennial cycle of helio magnetic decoupling, then I would say they finally are getting it right. But no. They just can’t look up at that be glowing ball in the sky.

Wait a minute.

Is global warming causing Iceland to rise?

Or is Iceland's rising causing global warming?

It's all so complicated.

A couple of things here. Iceland sits on the mid-Atlantic rift where continental tectonic plates (North American and Euroasian) are pushed apart by new magma from beneath the earth’s crust. Several years ago a new volcano burst forth off the coast of Iceland when none had been found before. As that magma comes out, the land above could be expected to rise, with or without glaciers.

Now Iceland’s glaciers may be melting due to volcanic heat from below or residual warming from the “little ice age,” or just temporarily melting until the next round of solar radiation decreases. But to attribute Iceland’s rise to glacial melting and then connect that to climate change (which everyone knows is manmade /sar) is a step too far.

I missed this key piece of science research in my excerpt:

"Our research makes the connection between recent accelerated uplift and the accelerated melting of the Icelandic ice caps,” said Kathleen Compton of the University of Arizona, a geoscientist and one of the paper’s co-authors, in a statement."

I believe causal causality is not proof of an underlying scientific principle. For example, "if it's raining I will get wet" is true, it doesn't mean "if I'm wet it must be raining" is also true - I could be taking a shower or swimming.

Is there ANYTHING that can’t be attributed to globull warming?

...and 24 years ago the "Ozone Hole" caused Mount Pinatubo to erupt. Thank GOD we did away with those Ozone Hole Causing McDLT Styrofoam containers!

And to think that globull warming alarmists would look us as if were were hopelessly backward if we attributed half of what they say is caused by globull warming to God instead.

The global warming(or climate change) advocates are easy to understand.

They simply say everything is caused by global warming. They repeat the same thing over and over again.

That is the essence of the “big lie” technique. A lie repeated enough times is thought to be the truth.

Tell that to the People of Pompeii-— 79 ad a bad year for Climate Change Global warming—we are being sold a bill of goods here. IF—it exists—a Big If too-—they can handle it in the future with better ways to deal with the problems. If America went back to horse and buggies—China’s Coal fired plants would off set anything we do.

They had better be careful. If the ice doesn’t melt evenly the island might capsize, just like Guam when it gets overcrowded!

I would believe magnetic pole shifts driving volcanism as well as earthquakes.
Not climate change.

The solution to the Iceland problem is to dump tons and tons of rock on the island to lower it. This will stop global warming......
