Jesse Jackson: States Are ‘Undermining the Right to Vote' With For-Profit Prisons

The Rev. Jesse Jackson says the states are “undermining the right to vote" by locking up people in for-profit prisons.

Jackson joined House Democratic Reps. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) at a press conference in Washington last Thursday where they introduced a constitutional amendment that would put elections under federal control to guarantee the right to vote to every American, including those in prison.

"Most of these states now, they're using privatized jails for two purposes: one, to disenfranchise voters, because once you’ve been to jail it’s more difficult to vote. And two, it’s a profit-making industry. So that, if you’re in jail “x” number of days, the Corrections Corporation of America gets paid. They must be guaranteed 90 percent occupancy. Jail becomes a daycare center or a homeless shelter for so many people. It’s a profit-making industry -- jails are for profit. And so the growth of the jail industry and also in many places, the jail labor force, undermines the domestic labor force.

Public employee unions hate privately run prisons because they lose union dues and the taxpayers save money. Sounds like Jesse is trying to get money and votes from them.

...because once you’ve been to jail it’s more difficult to vote...

Um, doesn't it depend whether or not you've been convicted of a felony that means you can't vote? I don't think jail has anything to do with it, does it? I could be wrong.

Isn’t Jessy Jackson’s son in prison?

Government-run anything is inevitably a debacle. Private enterprise does it best in all cases with the exception of the military. But under the hussein regime, even America's once-proud military has been destroyed due to the mooselimb outreach and sodomite agenda. In any case, America's for-profit prisons are the very best in the world.

Jackson and Sharpton are like parasitic fleas on a dog. The fact that these two bottom-feeders are still pandered to by the DemocRats, says much about the them all.

Funny, I thought people went to jail because THEY ARE CRIMINALS!

Oh, but Jesse can't sell that.

While you’re incarcerated, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. When you’ve ‘paid your debt to society’, your voting rights, and ALL other rights should be restored. If you’re such a risk that your rights can’t be restored, then you should stay in prison.

That’s how it should work.

I don’t agree with convicted felons losing their voting rights and the right to keep and bear arms after their sentence is done. If they are so ‘dangerous’ they shouldn’t be able to vote or have a firearm, they should stay in prison. You’re either a free citizen or not.

For profit prisons hardly make a dent in the numbers of black jobs or voting rights taken away by uncontrolled illegal immigration across our Southern Border. But, illegal aliens are the new underclass for the Donkeys and he will say nothing to offend them. He looks for his bogey men elsewhere. No, Jesse wants to make sure the flood continues and wants them voting (Donkey, of course) to boot.

Yes, but whether one is in a state run prison or for profit prison doesn’t have anything to do with it. He must have been talking to some dumb people.

Clearly states have the constitutional right to revoke the right to vote for commission of a crime.

Yeah, whether it’s for profit or not is irrelevant.

He was probably throwing in the “for profit” bit to piss off the audience.

Clearly these folks haven’t read the constitution.
