I advise people, when they’re selling large-ticket items (like cars), to meet at their local bank branch. They can do their inspections and test drives, then go inside to either get cash or cashier’s check.
LOL’s
I have used CL many times in the last 7 or 8 years, never had a problem. Are there scammers there, yes, of course there are, quite easy to spot on the first or second communication.
I am in Houston, sold an excavator to a guy up in Oklahoma for $12K, never even came and looked at it. The only reference I gave him was that of a trucker from his area that had done work for me before. Wire transferred funds to my bank and I shipped him the machine.
Commercial equipment is an entirely different beast, IMO. I was speaking to the low-volume home goods/personal use crowd as they make up most of the Craigslist transactions and they seem to be the most common victim of Craigslist thugs.
That's the ONLY means I have used to sell items on CraigsList........and that's the recommended way to conduct your business. LOCAL ONLY!
As a side note, I have a high end road bike I'm trying to sell and in the past three days I've gotten two bogus inquires on it..........One of them has already been reported to CraigsList as a fraudulent buyer.........
I have never used CL to buy or sell but what tipped you off that the inquiries were bogus?
It is, most scammers have no idea what you are even selling or buying, they can’t talk shop.
Well Ditter, they rarely use the phone, mostly text or email, I tell them in my ads text and email won’t be answered. Second they offer you full price without asking any questions, Third they send you an E mail asking you to contact them on a quick link{click bait}.Lots of other clues but those are the main ones.
The family says he’s never been in trouble with the police, and the sheriff says the same with the qualification that they had “questioned’ him before about other caseS. So that’s at least a red flag.
He’s too stupid not to give up any accomplice he might have had. Why would he have used his own cell phone instead of a throwaway from 7-11. Not a smart criminal at all.
He did use a throw away but being stupid, he used his credit card to buy it..
We buy and sell on Craigslist and have never had a problem. We were boat shopping and looking at boats listed on there for $40-50k. I recently bought a great dinghy and motor on there for $1k. I’ve sold furniture, etc. you just have to be smart but that goes for everywhere anymore.
That’s funny, in a sick way. I feel badly for his family who’ve probably suffered his ‘issues’ in silence and by looking the other way for a long time. This was not sudden. Probably one of those cases where no one would admit to the 2 ton elephant in the room. None of them will ever be the same again.
Nor the family of the victims. I am sure they are thinking “Why did we let them go alone? One of us should have gone along.” And various other things. They are the ones I feel the most for.
I would be willing to bet that this was not his first rodeo. One does not plan, to the point of buying untraceable phones, to rob and shoot two someones in cold blood on their virgin crime spree. He may not have been caught but have a feeling that he had been down this road before.
There’s no question the Runions two daughters are most sympathetic here. I hope they are not plagued with guilt over their parents’ death.
It sounds like they are very religious people who, per the pastor, are quick to forgive. I hope for their sake he’s right. The guilt could kill them over time, so this little twerp could end up killing several people, destroying even that many more lives. This type of thing has repercussions for generations.
I don’t equate being careful with paranoia, since most civilians (non-military/non-LEO) are not likely to have developed the situational awareness needed to quickly assess a situation and react with a minimal amount of thought. Anytime one leaves their own environment, a new set of variables can impact the outcome of a situation.
When you respond via CR, your email address is not shown to the potential buyer. In both cases, the buyer requested that I respond to his email address which he provided in the text of the message claiming that it was easier.
I then did a google search on the address which took me to a Craigs List page that posts warnings about such individuals and he was on there......
"What makes you reach that conclusion, Doctor?"
"Oh, the holes in their heads were a pretty big clue, don't ya think?"
