Looking at the glorious NON-EVENT that was this BS blizzard, I ask that we conservatives teach our friends how to see the dangers of the nanny state.
Think about it....media, politicians and "scientists" in the government all worked together to SHUT DOWN commerce, freedom of movement, etc.
I know this would be easy to let them off the hook and say "Well, they did their best, better safe than sorry, etc."
I think, however, that this splendidly demonstrates that these entities think of themselves as overlords who KNOW better than their citizenry how to conduct themselves in a potential crisis.
I grew up where schools shut down if the weather was REALLY REALLY bad, but NEVER did we have a governor threaten us with arrest or tell us to not open our business.
The American pioneers would laugh in the face of Cuomo, Malloy, Christie, and the rest. We should too.
Their weather models suck, but their climate models are completely accurate you ignorant, racist, tea-bagging climate-change deniers!

I don’t blame them. And if Manhattan got six inches, then it’s just as well to get it plowed and dumped in the rivers as soon as possible, without having stuck cars blocking all the thoroughfares.
Better safe than sorry, and I’m sure everyone can use a day off!
As for the weather service, and the weather channels, they are pretty much forced to play the game that way. If they over-estimate, then people are a little upset, but if they underestimate, then people are furious. When they underestimated the lake storm late last year, Andrew Cuomo said he would establish a state weather service, since the commercial ones were no good.
It edged out to sea further than expected. But it could have gone the other way. Meanwhile, I’m not complaining. Less shoveling, less chance of a power outage. Thank God.
Well ... when the weatherman says that there is maybe up to three feet of snow coming my way ... I am going to be getting ready for it. If the weatherman is wrong, it’s no big deal.
However, the “other way around” ... that is, if I don’t pay attention to their forecast and it happens, then I may end up dead!
Between the two options, I’ll listen to the weatherman’s forecast and take the appropriate measures ... :-) ...

Imagine what will happen in the metro areas when Obama’s malfeasance comes full circle and the nation falls into a catastrophic crisis of production, delivery and confidence. NYC was just a preview.
I have 28 inches of global warming in my yard, and wind gusts of 70+ mph over a multiple hour span not too far away. I'm amazed I haven't lost power (yet). It's tapering off now, but it's not over.
But, they gotta keep the streets cleared for the emergency vehicles to respond to all the stranglings caused by people being shut up in their houses for so long.
Let us remember that the meteorologists have a heck of a time trying to combine the countless variables in order to get an accurate forecast for even a couple of days in the future. They messed this one up, but it is understandable. Even with the help of much experience and constant improvements in their weather models, they can still be wrong.
Now, let’s take some D level physics students who obviously evaded stats 101 and advanced simulation techniques - give them degrees in “climate science” and try to believe that these bozos could forecast our climate years from now. And remember the climate scientist motto, “Never let bad data get in the way of a wanted conclusion.”
After panicky New Yorkers stormed their local neighborhood Whole Foods to stock up for the “Blizzard of 2015” which subsequently was revised to merely “The Tempest In A Teapot of 2015”...

The weathermen do good around here and I listen to their forecasts of an arriving snowstorm or blizzard, or high winds or tornadoes, etc. I don’t know why you wouldn’t because a century ago, you would have had no idea what was about to hit you, before it was right on top of you!
I don’t know if it’s the nanny state so much as our obsession with blame. Back in the 90s I was watching a show about hurricanes and at one point they were talking to the guys that issue evacuation warnings. They went into detail on how much of a no win situation they were in, if they called an evacuation and the hurricane didn’t hit there or wasn’t as strong everybody complained they got it wrong, if they didn’t call an evacuation and the region got gut punched everybody wanted to know why they weren’t warned. They tried to err on saving lives, better to evacuate and having nothing bad happen than the reverse. And since then of course we have the Katrina fiasco, which makes that error the necessary one. Plus you’ve got modern TV “news” which feel the need to make everything the biggest baddest scariest whatever it is ever.
This is the situation we’ve created. Instead of blaming the guys doing the best they can to predict the future maybe we should be wondering why we need life to have so much drama.
It’s not BS from Rhode Island to Maine today. If Boston hadn’t banned driving, the plows wouldn’t be able to clear the roads because of all of the stuck cars.
If you remember the ‘78 blizzard, Boston and Providence were paralyzed for over a week. So... It was probably better to err on the side of caution.

Did they ever give this gigantinormous, super-colossal, megastorm a name? Other than “Nor-Easter”, I mean...
Here is what happens when people shrug off even a coating of snow, and decide that they are going to be "tough men" who aren't going to be slowed down by mother nature.
I'm the first one to rage against nanny government. But this is not a case of nanny government. By keeping the roads in the northeast closed during this snowstorm - or blizzard - not only probably saved lives and personal injury but saved millions of dollars in property damage like the one in the video I linked above (which happened just a couple weeks ago in Michigan).
Closing the public roads during a snowstorm is smart and has nothing to do with taking away our rights. Are our rights violated when schools and businesses close for the same reason?
BTW, I live in the NY area. There were no roadblocks put up last night to arrest or fine people who were out. There were no dragnets or anything like that. The road ban was targeted more at employers who would have otherwise insisted their employees drive to work and we would have had a major debacle on our hands this morning.
As a result, the roads were clear and the snowplows got to do their job. And whether it was two feet of snow or just a few inches of snow, the road is a dangerous place to be when it is going on.
If you own an auto body shop, I can sympathize with you. A lot of your business was lost due to these road shutdowns.
