There Is Basically No Snow In New York — But, Absurdly, The Entire City Is Shut Down
Business Insider ^ | 01/27/2015 | HENRY BLODGET

I haven't seen official snowfall totals yet, but judging from a glance out the window, it looks as if New York City might have gotten about 6 inches Monday night. Meanwhile, the entire city is shut down.

Schools, government, public transportation, private transportation, and — by virtue of the lack of transportation — most offices and businesses.

It's just absurd.

I've lived in New York for almost my whole life — 48 years and counting. I have seen the city weather many actually large snowstorms, including a 26-incher just a few years go. The city stayed open through all of them. The garbage-trucks-turned-snow-plows drove until the streets were clear enough for adventurous buses, trucks, and cars. The subways and buses ran. Airports remained mostly open. Homeowners shoveled their walks. Pedestrians navigated big snow piles and slush lakes. Car owners waited until they just couldn't wait any longer and then chipped their cars out of the massive ice-walls that had built up around them.

In short, the city slowed down for a little while. And, maybe, in extreme circumstances, schools shut down for a day or two. But the whole city never closed.

And this wasn't because massive snowstorms weren't forecast, by the way.

I can remember as a kid many times hearing excitement build at school about an impending blizzard that might blast the city and give us all an unplanned vacation day (and, at the same time, force parents with jobs and plans to scramble to figure out what to do with us). I can remember staying up late into the night, peering out my window into the snow, hoping enough would pile up that, early the next morning, just before I had to leave for school, the call would finally come.

But it rarely did.

It is all part and parcel of the infantilization of society.
All leftist utopias do it.

To be fair, sometime after the next iceage ends what ever is left of humankind likely will experience sustained and catastrophic global warming. As the 1 mile thick glacier covering the ruins of what had once been New York City melts it will probably pulverize everything that is left.

The left was blaming manmade global warming for the blizzard, so what does the lack of blizzard mean?

But Of Course: MSNBC Guest Blames Blizzard On Global Warming

Got 7 here in Pittsburgh. Have not skipped a beat.
And our terrain is WAY more challenging than NYC.

"We" may not be able to predict two days in advance very well, but "our" gubmint-supported "climatologists" have got "our" (Congress- and SCOTUS-endorsed) predictions for several decades to centuries ahead down exactly, and to a science!!! /sarc

Yes, it's called Political Science. ;)

When Democrats see a potential challenge they simply surrender without even trying.

I will be 68 years old soon. When I was a kid growing up in West Virginny, we didn't have meteorologists frothing at the mouth over a snowstorm. We called it what is was--winter--got on our sleds, had snowball fights and shoveled driveways and walks for extra money (this was before 'allowances' came into being).

In my humble opinion, this entire event was nothing less than the Obama Administration 'pinging' the weather reporting media to see how easy it would be to shut down major metros.

I think we will see this again--with National Guard troops deployed 'to keep us safe' despite the lack of snow.

Global warming is to blame for this storm. Bill Nye the Science Guy says so!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ifpfd-ydBHo#t=40

Response to this video from a poster on WUWT:

“The majority of conformists, and careerist “zeitgeist” followers like Nye, are not a bit wiser than the superstitious humans of the 16th century who believed every bad weather was produced by the devil and his witches.
Today, only the name of the devil has changed into “CO2” and the whole insane CAGW crusade is nothing else but a embarrassing and increasingly stupid witch-hunt…”

Response to the above: “The only difference now is; they want US to burn, not the devil and his witches.”

When it snows in Carolina, everybody drives their car into a ditch and starts drinking.

It’s certainly “no snow” compared to the hysterical forecasts—or what it should take to shut down the city.

Well, I think a lot of people remember what happened to Atlanta last year, when the weather forecasters underestimated the ice and snow storm that hit Atlanta - people were stuck for more than 10 hours in some locations.

it’s even happening in MN. Last year a lot of businesses shut down because of the cold!

Yeah, but southerners have an excuse, because nobody down there knows how to drive in the snow. So even a light dusting can be deadly conditions to them.

LOL…this bunch of severely stupid Socialists can’t get enough government, so 72% voted a Communist in as mayor of NYC. They deserve the consequences.

Too bad “de Blasio” didn’t think of shutting down the grid and cutting off the gas pipelines. That flock of stupid sheep would have sat freezing in the dark, while 5” of snow fell outside.

Look for some new government program to be coming from the ‘devastating tragedy’

Dumba$$ Cuomo already proposed a “NY State government weather service” after Buffalo, NY got dumped on last month (6 feet of snow in one night)

As if a whole new government weather bureaucracy would be somehow better- when the normal weather services all predicted it exactly...

cities in the south do the same thing.

Not really. Most of the shutdowns happen because we can't physically move (lack of plows and snow-tolerant tires), not out of bare fear of impending snowfall. OK, the last one we (Atlanta) DID predictively shut down, but that was because just weeks before nearly ALL of our considerable traffic got stuck for upwards of 24 hours from a freak ice storm; the ensuing embarrassment from nothing happening means we'll not do that again.

For NYC, though, the fizzle is indeed worth laughing at. They've got the equipment to deal with it, and a long history of coping with heavy snow multiple times a year. Sure, a "super blizzard" might slow things down, but we've slogged thru such things before.
