Dropkick Murphys to Walker: 'We literally hate you'

BOSTON - A veteran Celtic punk rock band has asked Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to stop using their music at appearances because they hate him.

In a Jan. 24 tweet to Walker, Dropkick Murphys said, "Please stop using our music in any way ... We literally hate you!! Love, Dropkick Murphys."

The tweet was in response to Walker playing their song "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" as he took the stage at the Iowa Freedom Summit.

This came up during the 2008 election, when Palin was playing Heart's "Barracuda".

Here's the thing: the Republican Party has a paid license from ASCAP (or BMG, or maybe both). That means they have the right to play any song in the catalog.

The artists signed a contract with the licensing agency to represent them, collect royalties, and pay them. The license holders don't have to ask permission, on a case-by-case basis.

However, I don't know if the artist's contract with the licensing agency permits them to pick and choose which licensees can play their music, before or after it happens.

I should note that this applies only to "live performances", like conventions. Even if it happens to be televised, it is still considered a live performance. The license doesn't grant the right to use it in something like a campaign commercial. During the same campaign, John McCain got in trouble by using a John Fogerty (I think) song. It went to court, and McCain lost.

Walker to Dropkick Murphys: “My using your suckass music at the Iowa summit was an error on the part of a sound technician. I never would have authorized that hideous screeching as a sound signature for my appearance, since it ill behooves me to be associated with such a talentless melange of hacks and grifters. You can rest assured your tone-deaf howling will have no place in any of my future appearances. Now piss off.”

This song is only known for the long instrumental intro - I would be a dollar to a donut the intro part of the song got Walker to the podium long before the awful lyrics and awful vocals kicked in - thus there is no observable tie to Boston in that part of the song.

Great instrumentals - awful vocals.

I kinda disagree....the screeching sound is only the vocals...most of the song is instrumental only, and it’s good. I’m sure that’s what Walker used.

Oh, I thought the screeching sound was some kind of electronic distortion or feedback loop or something. I can't imagine a human being making a sound like that. Oh, but wait ... we're talking about commies, not human beings.

Never mind.

It’s awful - it doesn’t sound human, I agree. I do like the rest of the song however....commies or not.

How come it seems like it's only the liberals who practice hate and intolerance!

When the liberals want to portray an intolerant conservative, they have to invent fictional characters. Such as Archie Bunker and Tony Soprano. But the liberals have tons of them in real life.

This is a broken record we have seen before. I recall Sarah getting the same from the Wilson sisters (Heart) over using Barracuda. It seems always from leftist musicians to conservative pols. IMHO they should all use the Peter Gunn theme by Mancini who is long gone when they come out and be done with it.

I remember Rush talking about this. Hynde was being pressured to sue Rush over his use of her song as his theme song. She said ‘my parents enjoy him, so It’s ok’ or something to that effect.

Didn’t she make Rush make a contribution to Peta as a condition?

If they hate him so much, they are free to not cash that portion of their royalty check or donate it to an opposing candidate.

I used to like them when I was in the military, but when they came out as Obama jock strap sniffers I promptly ran the few CD’s of theirs I had in my collection through a shredder...

If he was using the Boston Pops version, he might not have had any idea that these dweebs wrote the song. I didn’t, till I went to YouTube. It’s a great song!
