Panicked super rich buying boltholes with private airstrips to escape if poor rise up

Super rich hedge fund managers are buying 'secret boltholes' where they can hideout in the event of civil uprising against growing inequality, it has been claimed.

Nervous financiers from across the globe have begun purchasing landing strips, homes and land in areas such as New Zealand so they can flee should people rise up.

With growing inequality and riots such as those in London in 2011 and in Ferguson and other parts of the USA last year, many financial leaders fear they could become targets for public fury.

Robert Johnson, president of the Institute of New Economic Thinking, told people at the World Economic Forum in Davos that many hedge fund managers were already planning their escapes.

He said: “I know hedge fund managers all over the world who are buying airstrips and farms in places like New Zealand because they think they need a getaway."

GettyAustralian outbackHideaway: Rich people are plotting to escape to remote parts of the world Mr Johnson, said the economic situation could soon become intolerable as even in the richest countries inequality was increasing.

He said: "People need to know there are possibilities for their children – that they will have the same opportunity as anyone else.

"There is a wicked feedback loop. Politicians who get more money tend to use it to get more even money."

He added: "I think the rich are worried and they should be worried. I mean inequality, why does it matter?

"Most people have heard the Oxfam statistics that now we’ve got 80, the 80 richest people in the world, having more wealth that the bottom three-point-five billion, and very soon we’ll get a situation where that one percent, one percent of the richest people have more wealth than everybody else, the 99."

I can’t put my hands on the statistic quickly, but the percentage of adults in the US with a negative net worth is unbelievably high.

All you need is a few bucks in your pocket and no debt to be ahead of them.

Don't know if this story true, but I think it'd be funny if it was.

IMHO, by and large, these people made this wealth without having to do anything. Sure, they're likely smart, and lucky, and understand the intricacies of the financial markets. Yes, they took risks, sometimes even with their own money.

But how many of them can actually do something, anything, that would help to keep themselves alive outside of this society they've been arguably looting via their incestuous relationship with those in government?

Most of the real doers and makers in this country, the people with smarts and skills, fall under the punitive taxation and regulations supposedly intended to punish the rich, but instead make it nearly impossible to attain much financial independence. Plumbers, farmers, soldiers, engineers, mechanics, welders, chemists, etc. - these are the people who can keep themselves and their families alive. Lawyers and financiers? Not so much, unless they can use their wealth to get help from others.

And if their wealth is useless, or the others aren't interested in helping them out? They die.

What are they going to do with the pilots and their families? Where are they going to find security to guard these compounds from the locals? Where are they going to find food and water when theirs runs out? Who's going to unclog their toilets, fix their cars, cut their lawns, make their food? They're all but helpless, and they don't have the sense to stop strangling the golden goose that keeps them alive.

The people going to other countries are going to be in for a VERY rude awakening when stuff is ALSO bad in the country they are fleeing to.

The ‘natives’ will go after the rich ‘white guy/Yankee’ before anyone else. They’ll be eaten alive. The local politicians and law enforcement won’t give a damn about them. LOL

I suppose billionaires could afford to pay off enough locals to have a security force, and buy off the local politicians and what law enforcement that may be there. However, if enough of the locals rise up, the hired guns for security will throw down their rifles and run(or join the local invaders), and the local government will look the other way(they already got their money anyway).

From where I write, it looks like the sheep are going to plant those whizzes. Most unfortunate that the actual oligarchs will escape notice by the peons when the collapse happens.

Smart.

If I had the money that is pretty much the game plan I would follow.

So, are these the good rich people who earn their money by good old American free enterprise (and are “the rich” the Democrats hate) or the bad rich people who are Secretly Behind Communism and are the rich FReepers hate?

Hey rich, don't fear the people, fear God!

James 5
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

I tell you, I just don’t care how much money other people have.
I only care how much I have.
If the guy across the way has a house twice the size of mine what do I care?
If he has a more expensive car so what?
I don’t want his life; I like mine.
What is wrong with me?

So, what are the chances that should this happen, at least one SSBN captain and crew, knowing that their families have been killed in the uprising and lacking a functioning National Command Authority, decide to take matters into their own hands and bathe New Zealand in thermonuclear fire?

I suspect that it is not fear of the poor, but instead fear of out of control government that is driving this.

The irony is that such people cannot last very long even in well provisioned places, because they are quickly bored, and want their big city entertainments. They also crave frivolous luxuries that cannot be easily obtained out of the limelight.

Robert Johnson, president of the Institute of New Economic Thinking, sounds just like the sort who would address these other hypocritical ideologues who flew in on their private jets to decry wealth.

bugging in?

Oh, yes. Prepper term that is opposite of bugging out, it's hunkering down in a prepared home waiting for the local problems to blow over. It means you don't have to do the riskiest part of bugging out, which is exposed transportation with the infrastructure breaking down. It's also the best plan for beginners or for those who really don't have much of a safe location to go to.

Good point. Some people are just better than others at acquiring wealth.
