Thanks for the ping. Ugh. Looks like some brutal weather heading this way. AccuWeather has been getting everything wrong for the past year. Temperatures 5-7 degrees too high and snow predictions that are worse than flipping a coin. Just finished an hour and a half blowing a “dusting” of snow.

Great Lakes ice cover 13 percent higher than last year

As of Thursday (15JAN2015), ice covered 88 percent of Lake Erie and 34.1 percent of the Great Lakes overall. Last year at this time, ice cover on the Great Lakes, was 21.3 percent, says WOOD TV Chief Meteorologist Bill Steffen in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This makes this year’s ice cover 13 percent higher to date.

If you recall, last winter’s ice cover on the Great Lakes climbed to the second highest on record at 92.2 percent on March 6, 2014. That was due to the below-average temperatures that persisted from mid-January onward in the winter of 2014. leading to ”

Meanwhile, ice cover on Lake Erie – which is shallower than the other Great Lakes – has sky-rocketed this month, with the lake now about 88 percent covered in ice. Just a couple weeks ago, it was ice-free.

Long-term outlooks suggest more cold on the way, which means ice-cover records could be in play this year.

In addition, the water level of the all the Great Lakes is above normal. Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron are about 5 inches above the long term average. This is the first time this has happened in about 25 years.

Along with above-average precipitation in the Great Lakes watershed, the frigid winter of 2013-2014 helped reduce evaporation, leding to the higher lake levels.

He’s predicting what will happen in the Midwest and East over the next couple of months. What does he think will happen out west? Things were looking good a few weeks ago as far as the drought goes, but since then nothing. I would love to hear Joe’s forecast.

A VERY mild winter here in Southern Wisconsin, so far...

We seemed to have had ALL of our ‘Winter’ in November - Good Golly it was bone-shattering COLD for the entire month...and partially into December. Now 20’s and 30’s are the norm, and not even enough snow to cover up the dog poop in the yard; I’m gonna send Joe an e-mail about THAT, LOL!

Home tonight - Mr. Wonderful is hunting raccoon and I’m about to drift off with my Rufus (Basset Hound) and the latest murder-mystery novel on the nightstand.

He's been predicting "delayed" snow for a few weeks, at least for the Northeast.

Hard to enjoy the only weather you've got with the anticipation of more shoveling.
