See a Rare Comet-Moon Conjunction Tonight

Many of you already know about the triple shadow transit of Jupiter’s moons Io, Europa and Callisto. That’s scheduled for late tonight.

Earlier, around nightfall, the crescent moon will lie 1° or less to the south-southwest of comet 15P/Finlay. No doubt lunar glare will hamper the view some, but what a fun opportunity to use the moon to find a comet.

Finlay underwent a flare in brightness last week when it became easily visible in binoculars.

I’ve been trying to spot this comet but have been foiled by cloud cover.

Two nights ago my kids and I were treated with a view of Jupiter with 4 bright moons evenly spaced, one to the North and three to the South of the planet. The lineup was so perfect that at first I thought it was a lens aberration in my son’s telescope.

Cold clear skies here in Northern California have given the perfect opportunity to see Comet Lovejoy, the Andromeda Galaxy and Jupiter putting on a show.

Looks like the close approach of the moon to the comet occurred last night but they will still be within 10 degrees tonight, allowing the position of the moon to serve as a guide to finding the comet.

Thanks for posting that graphic. I have a hard time following a lot of the hints for sightings, as I do not know the location of many of sky features that that are given as reference points.

I only wish that our skies would not be overcast for so many of these celestial events...we’ve missed the last few eclipses and meteor showers here b/c of the low cloud cover.

Last good meteor shower we saw was about 2 years ago....but we are forever hopeful!

I know what you mean. We live near the Chesapeake Bay.

Yes, ever hopeful is a good way to be. :)

It’s bad here in Ohio, too. It is the second-cloudiest state after Washington State.

We finally had some clearing here last night, and I am pretty sure I saw Findlay.
