BRIDGETON, N.J. — Another police killing is stirring anger in another town, this time in New Jersey, where a tense traffic stop captured on video ended with a passenger shot to death as he stepped out of a car with his hands raised at shoulder height.

The newly released footage from a police dashboard camera shows Bridgeton officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley in a Dec. 30 stop that escalates quickly after Days warns his partner about seeing a gun in the glove compartment of the Jaguar...

[SNIP]

Reid, 36, had spent about 13 years in prison for shooting at New Jersey State Police troopers when he was a teenager. He was also arrested last year on charges including drug possession and obstruction; Days was one of the arresting officers then.

It was not wise of the officer to tell the suspect that he was going to kill him if he reached for something.

What??

He was on the streets after all those crimes? Interesting door they have on their prison. It spins!

This one’s gonna be real bad, I have a feeling.

Your gut feeling about this incident is right on point, if the story we're reading is accurate.

Right I did not see the suspect “lung” at the officer. I saw the suspect exit the vehicle, with hands partially raised and was almost immediately shot by both officers.

Did the suspect have another weapon? I have no idea.

But there was no lunging from my perspective.

BTW, you might want to relax as I never said one way or another here what my opinion of the shoot was.

I am only observing the video and listening to the audio. You seem really excited about this. Have a beer maybe.

Yeah....pre med...nobody with a gun should ever say shoot to kill...even in the right it will not help the cop...always shoot to “stop”.

So did I. He forced the door open and jumped to his feet towards the officer. Plain as day.

Did the suspect have another weapon? I have no idea.

Neither did the cop.

But there was no lunging from my perspective.

You can't even keep a text conversation straight. Soooo....

BTW, you might want to relax as I never said one way or another here what my opinion of the shoot was.

So your posting has no intended point at all!?! Sounds about right.

You seem really excited about this.

More of your slipshod observational skills on display.

Perhaps some quibbling over wording is going on. What I saw was that the passenger VERY suddenly and with great speed opened the door and “sprung” (I think that is an apt word to describe his exit) out and up. I’d like to be able to run this in slow motion with a “split second” clock showing to gauge just how quick this sudden action was. If I was in the cop’s situation, I very well might have fired also.

Exiting a vehicle suddenly and lunging at an officer are very differently things. One of which clearly suggests the passenger was lunging to attack the officer the other that the suspect quickly exited the vehicle.

Begs the question, did you see the suspect lung at the officer?

I’ll agree to abandon the descriptor “lunged” and instead use the descriptor “sprung.” That’s fair enough.

I believe cops are trained to shoot to kill, and never to shoot to stop.

Threaten a cop and they will shoot to kill you.

There is no reason to ever shoot to just injure.

Well, at least to me (stemming from my fencing days), a lunge requires going forward with your “lead” leg. I would describe the passenger’s actions as (after being told 8 times in less than a minute and many, many times [I didn’t count them] to not reach and to ‘show me your hands’) suddenly lurching or springing from the car.

As I said before, if I had been the cop, i may well have fired also.

If a cop (or any person) is in a reasonable fear for their life, then it puts them further at risk if they shoot to stop. That's why they are trained to shoot to kill in those situations.

If a cop is NOT in a reasonable fear for their life, then they are trained not to shoot.

Pretty straight forward and correct if you think about it.

It was not wise of the officer to tell the suspect that he was going to kill him if he reached for something.

They do that all the time. It's to get the attention of the lumberheads, dings and parole types. I would do the same thing in a situation like that.

Secondly, exciting the vehicle was not enough of a threat increase to shoot the suspect.

That's the big question here.

It appears the passenger side officer had already removed the weapon from the suspect vehicle. When the suspect exited the vehicle he appears to have his hands empty and partially raised.

Christie might get to work on his riot control.

Put him right up front, give him a stick.

Lurching, springing, lunging, launching...lol

I only saw the suspect quickly exit the vehicle with what appeared to be his empty hands up, raised about to shoulder height. Was there something there that none of us saw? I have no idea.

The attorneys will come up with all kinds of novel descriptions before this is over.
