A Middletown, New York man was arrested Monday on a charge of felony criminal mischief because he bulldozed his house, police say.
WNBC News reports police were called to the Middletown home Monday afternoon as 48-year-old James Rhein was knocking it down with a rented excavator and placing debris in dumpsters.
Police said Rhein hadnt filed for any demolition permits and hadnt even notified the utility companies of his intention to destroy the house. Emergency crews had to be called out Monday to shut off electric, water and gas to the property.
The one other party Rhein failed to notify was his wife, Diane Andryshak, who is the only legal owner of the house, according to records.
He bulldozed all her clothes in there. Washer, dryer, furnace, hot water heater, everything was still in there. In fact, her medication was still in there, neighbor Steve Belfiglio told CBS-New York.
The couple was reportedly living elsewhere, but many of their belongings were still inside. Rhein said the foundation of the house had been crumbling for years and needed costly repairs.
So I took it down, thats it, Rhein said.
When CBS-New York reporter Tony Aiello confronted Rhein about demolishing a house that wasnt legally his, Rhein seemed unconcerned.

Doesn’t even take a single cup of coffee to drive there from where I am at.
“Authorities said Rhein had no permits to raze the house, and he made no arrangements to have the utilities cut off. The city had to order an emergency shut-off Monday morning.”
From the recordonline link in 43.
The house transferred on December 18, 2005. They married on March 6, 2006. I doubt if she contributed a dime.
Yes, but was the emergency shut off ordered because it was actually needed, or simply because someone freaked out that the “proper procedure” hadn’t been followed?
I mean, bureacrats will be bureaucrats.
Is he expecting great make up sex?
Based on what reported facts?
Time-overlap, while I was copying and formatting and giving snacks to my kids and stuff.
Living in the area this happened on, I can say it likely happened this way: he began the demo and someone called the code enforcer.
He checked his flip book and had a cow.
Crews rushed out to shut stuff off.
Yeah, that’s about the possibility I was thinking of too.
The article said, “Emergency crews HAD TO BE called” to shut stuff off, which implies that the utilities weren’t shut off previously.
Just defending my reading-comprehension credentials. I need something to hold over my kids.
Just tell them it will “Buff out”.
Just don’t let them see the grimace as you walk away. ...
Also the same local area where a town councilwoman glued a sex toy to her own windshield and claimed nefarious Republicans were behind it.
Among other things..
Nothing would surprise me here.
LOL!
“Also the same local area where a town councilwoman glued a sex toy to her own windshield and claimed nefarious Republicans were behind it.”
Ha, that’s great. Bet they had to call in Columbo to crack that case.
“Cool guys don’t look at explosions!”
*singing, terribly*
Very bizarre, to say the least.
Yeah, it does imply that but it doesn’t really say it. I’m wary of implications with stuff like this, because, it could be they “had to be” called simply because some inspector or other bureaucrat demanded it.
Oh well, reckless or not, I admire this man’s moxy.
Still officially “open” last I heard.
She also had a horse head appear in her pool and she somehow magically knew something was in there without looking, so she sent her husband to look.
Real sick lady, she lost her last election.
Haven’t heard hide nor hair of her since.
Probably still pulling stupid stuff and claiming nonexistent persecution.
“Welcome to Middletown!”
So when are you going to come out this way and visit?
Lol!
“Cool guys don’t look at explosions!”
What a waste of a perfectly serviceable explosion.
