Kenya Barris, creator of ABCs black-ish, was motivated to write the comedy about an African-American familys efforts to honor its heritage in part by the unreality of what he grew up watching on television.
I saw Friends and Seinfeld and thought, What part of New York is this? recalled Barris, who is black. Its not about being diverse. Its about being true to the world.
His show comes 15 years after civil rights groups, galvanized by a lineup of new network series almost entirely devoid of minority characters, sought and ultimately won agreements from major broadcasters to put programs on the air that better reflect the nations population.
An AP analysis of regular cast members on prime-time comedies and dramas on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox found progress since then in hiring black actors, but slighted other minorities. Casts at three of the four networks are still whiter than the nation as a whole.

The title should be “Networks still hire too many white people”. Something along those lines.
If programs resulting from this so-called “analysis” succeed, they’ll succeed.
However, methinks they’ll fail miserably - just as most new programs do.
Back in the days when Cosby was a good guy, his program succeeded because it was - quite simply - a good program that happened to star an all-black family.
I should add that it matters little what the networks do, because they are doomed anyway.
Blacks are vastly over-represented on television today. Whites have been relegated to being stupid, goofy, subservient and easily intimidated cowards, while blacks are portrayed as their antithesis. That’s why I stopped watching all network programming long ago.
Umm, Cops?

As insipid and liberal as most TV is, I wouldn’t mind forcing a few Lib white actors into the unemployment line to make way for subpar black and Latino actors. The result would simply be America turning off the awful networks more quickly than they are now and the acceleration of the point at which they are put out of their misery (and ours).
There are many times that you watch TV and would swear Whites were in the minority in the USA, so I won’t know what Blacks are complaining about. They really should go to an all Black country if they can’t stand to see Whites on TV.
Add to that homosexuals and feminists and you have something totally unwatchable - and I haven’t for the past 10 years.
I thought the Bernie Mac show was awesome in its honesty.
He played himself living his life. He worked to get out of the hood and when he made it he struggled to keep the hood out of Beverly hills. He was happier with old Jewish neighbors like Don Rickles and Rob Reiner.
I especially liked the episode where he was telling his young niece that no white person owes her a damn thing for slavery that ended 150 years before she was born.
Black and latino, black and latino. Where are the Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese, and Vietnamese comedians on sit coms?
What about ethinic “white” European immigrants (Irish, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Ukranian, Spanish, Portugese)?
Yeah, eight hours of reruns of Cops daily on every network should easily satisfy their demands for more diversity.
The lack of “diversity” is appalling!
No positive images of:
Conservatives,
Christians,
Jews,
Stay at home Moms,
tweaky outcasts from the real world
None of their images inspire any confidence in the person.
I grew up in Jersey and I could definitely identify with Seinfeld. Friends? I think that was Hollywood's interpretation of New York's hip, young nerds.
I saw Friends and Seinfeld and thought, What part of New York is this? recalled Barris, who is black.
The SAFER side probably.
12% so in fact we see too many on tv.
