My White Privilege - Vanity
Self | 8 JAN 14 | SampleMan

Posted on 01/08/2015 7:16:39 AM PST by SampleMan

I tire of hearing how success is dependent upon the financial status of the parents, and the coupled assertion that whites have a shared privilege of historical financial success.

I grew up in a very rural, all white area. My elementary class was comprised of 13 kids, 11 families farmed or ran cattle, one operated a small two pump gas station, and one worked as meat cutters. About three families were lower middle class, while the rest were all working poor. We didn’t consider ourselves to be poor, but that is how the government classified us.

Not a single family took assistance. Assistance was offered even then for free school lunches, food stamps, and other forms of welfare. No one would take it. The farm kids all worked. I woke at 6am, was on the school bus by 7am, and after I got home at 5pm (yes a 50 mile bus ride twice a day takes a lot of time) I did farm chores until 8 or later. Non-school days were 10+ hr work days, except for Sundays, when I would attend church and spend the afternoons exploring the timber patches and ponds of 100 sq miles. Most of the kids had similar lives.

Of the 13 of us, 11 went to college, and all that went got their degree in 4 years. Five went on to get master degrees.

Although we were poor, our parents expected us to take care of ourselves. Not by any means helicopter parents, just parents who didn’t tolerate laziness. None of us left home with inherited money, an allowance, or a paved path. Each of us headed out on our own.

I remember overnights at friends' houses with unheated bedrooms in the winter, where your breath formed ice on the sheets. I remember 3 boys that shared a full-size bed, and when I visited there were 4 of us in it.

How did we fair? At almost 50 I look at our class of 13 and see mainly great success, both family and professional. These are the stories of my 13 classmates:

-CFO of a regional company -Editor of a well-known national magazine and published author -Naval Aviator, senior officer, and now IT project manager -Cattleman owning over 5000 acres of highly productive land -Rodeo champion and cattle foreman -Service manager of tractor supply store -Elementary school teacher -Nurse -Home maker -High school teacher -Farmer -Business manager -And we lost one classmate to drug abuse and ultimately suicide.

We never received our white privilege packets, we never got a Mulligan for our lack of moneyed family, we all left home the summer after HS graduation and forged our own paths.

Just saying “cockaphobia” could be taken another way...

like...

fear of roosters?

caucaphobia? How do you pronounce that? And wouldn’t that lead to some.... confusion?

It's pronounced "kawka-phobia." It describes the irrational fear of white people, which I'm sure you agree, seems of late to have become a widespread epidemic spread by leftist race-baiters.

I don't see what there is to be confused about.

OOooooh.. !!!

That sounds really interesting. I’m assuming (hopefully not wrongfully) that the “Species” is HUMANS ..??

Hmmmmmm ..?? I wonder what the animal lovers are going to think about that ..??

Well, my nephew has my dvd so I might as well get the book; and will there be a book for the “species” ..??

Thanks for the info.

My family was upper lower class at best before parents divorced when I was 9. Father abandoned family and Mom raised 5 kids on welfare and food commodities while working full time cooking every night and weekend. As a young child the concept of "welfare" was something that was my endless shame because all my neighborhood friends had mom and dad, nice home, nice clothes, a meal on the table 3 times a day.

Those feelings of shame propelled me on to a 4 yr college degree, my own home, my college educated sons and a happy life. I thank God for his blessings everyday.

I grew up VERY poor in Oklahoma. We couldn’t even afford a Barbie Doll, they were about $2. We were SO poor. But we were expected to grad from HS and then college and we all did. I paid my own way with bank loans, couldn’t get student loans. Repaid them on time in full! Got a double major in 4 years. Worked summers during college at a factory without any AC. 106F outside meant 110F inside. It was hot Our house had no heat or AC until we moved in 1967. Summmers were HOT, in the 100s. Winters were COLD, in the single digits, freezing - snow - ice - wind etc.

I can identify with the house you described...
“houses with unheated bedrooms in the winter”

We didn’t even have fans. there was one suction fan half way up the stairs but it didn’t pull any air from my window to my bed. I went to sleep with my face resting on the windowsill!

Daddy put a water cooler in the kitchen but it was at the opposite end of the house, from my bedroom, and my bedroom was on the second floor. there was a floor furnace on the first floor but the heat didn’t make it to the second floor, plus we turned it off at night for fear of the pilot light going out.

At some point Daddy put a window unit AC in the living room, but that cool air didn’t make it up the stairs to my room. I don’t remember an AC unit in my parents’ bedroom.

Nights were HOT. If only we had a fan or a breeze, but I think fans back then had metal blades and not much of a grill on front to protect tiny fingers from those blades.

But we were super healthy and hard workers. We all did well in school. Not rocket scientists, but did just fine. Our schools had no AC back then either, but they did have heat!

My dad was a tobacco/cigar salesman in Tulsa and this was when people discovered tobacco smoke was bad for you, plus it was too expensive in the 1950s for most people to buy a lot of extras like cigars. He worked at a company that went out of business. No warning, no severance pay, just went to work one day and the company had a CLOSED sign on the door. this happened to him two more times. Our little grocery store that my mother ran went broke too. Can you imagine married with three kids and you lose your job three times and your groc store goes belly up...

Well mom went to work first at a Dairy Queen, then Katz Dept store in Sapulpa OK. Then she went to work at the court house and late became County treasurer. for the first time she had a retirement plan.

We were very poor, but we were all deterimined to MAKE IT! we are all college grads and own our own homes.

Read books by HUGH ROSS....
http://www.amazon.com/Hugh-Ross/e/B001JSBHEU/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1420733327&sr=1-2-ent

He explains that the universe, and our own dear planet, were created for HUMANS! Great books!

I started life in the inner city of the '50s and lived among a bunch of privileged Whites and Blacks - they all worked hard to support their families and many owned their own homes. When we moved to the suburbs in '62, a number of privileged Blacks came too - they were the ones who worked hard to provide for their families and wanted to own their own homes with decent sized lawns and swimming pools.

Later in the '60s, my old neighborhood was infested by those who now bitch about "White Privilege".. They bought into Johnson's "Great Society", ignoring his disparagement of them, and felt the need to occupy themselves with wanton destruction and servitude to the government that despises them.

They were well on their way to what they purport to want, but opted to become slavish victims to a corrupt Democratic Party. They now fester in that which they helped create and can't remember what it was like to be free.

My mother-in-law grew up in England, spent time in abusive foster homes and orphanages, did the family laundry to earn the price of a movie ticket. The laundromat was a row of stone sinks and washboards.

When she went to nursing school, she discovered that other girls had separate night clothes to sleep in, and her mother wouldn’t speak to her for six months for getting an education and acting like she was better than her family.

Her white privilege: the vision in the American movies, where people lived clean, orderly, prosperous lives. Her ticket out. But she had to earn every cent of it, and she left everything behind to get it.

Easy for you, but how about accomplishing all of that after a cop frisks you at random on a New York City street on Nov. 17, 2009 (and come up clean)? Life gets VERY COMPLICATED then, as you have to spend the rest of your life plotting ways to exact revenge.
