Back around 1962 we got to attend a firepower demonstration at Eglin AFB. It was a fantastic show which lasted over an hour.
One of the things they did was have an F-104 fly right by the stands and break the sound barrier. We saw the plane approaching in total silence then all of a sudden the loudest noise I have ever heard. It literally hurt my ears and I am sure it did damage to some people’s.
I would be willing to bet that it was more than they intended.
