Apple's Software Is In A 'Nosedive' That Is Deeply Concerning, Longtime Apple Supporter Says
Business Insider ^ | 01/05/2015 | Jay Yarow

Respected developer Marco Arment is worried about Apple's future.

In a blog post he writes: "Apple's hardware today is amazing — it has never been better. But the software quality has taken such a nosedive in the last few years that I'm deeply concerned for its future."

Arment was CTO at Tumblr before he left to start Instapaper, the first app that let users save stories to be read later. He also launched Overcast, an increasingly popular podcasting app. He records his own podcast, which has a devoted following in Apple and developer circles.

Arment is not an alarmist. He dislikes people who are alarmist. And he knows the reaction his posts will provoke, so he's generally careful with his words.

"Apple has completely lost the functional high ground," Arment says. "'It just works' was never completely true, but I don't think the list of qualifiers and asterisks has ever been longer."

Arment blames the prioritizing of marketing for the problems with Apple's software. Apple wants to have new software releases each year as a marketing hook, but the annual cycles of updating Apple's software are leading to too many bugs and problems, he says:

I too am outraged by this incompetence and am stomping my iPad to bits as we speak. I have had way too many hassles from those Cupertino idiots//////

You don'y own an iPad, DennisW. . . look again, in your fevered state, you are stomping your Android tablet.

I highly recommend a Roku box as a DVD alternative.

We don't have a TV. We go through a fair amount of YouTube, etc. But the ads are getting out of control. CBS.COM and HULU got the axe after they started airing "Plan B" ads.

I haven’t read the full thread so I don’t know if this ground has been covered yet but...

I used Bento for a number of years as by CRM for my business. Apple stopped supporting it. No replacement. No better functionality. Gone. I had to go elsewhere.

I used Pages for my newsletters. The new iteration of Pages doesn’t include features I used regularly (like linking text boxes) because they want the experience to be the same on desktop and iOS device. Screw that. I want my functionality back. If you want to make the experience seamless, bring iOS up, don’t dumb down my main computer!

I have had to recently do a factory restore on both my iPad and iPhone. I have had both since their inceptions and they were full of business information. To fix the problem I was having, I couldn’t restore from old backup... had to set up as new. Lost information despite my diligence (not to mention the place I was in games). The best part is that some problems seem fixed... but not all.

I could go on but will stop there. Apple is in a spiral with their software and they are making stupid decisions.

I hear ya on Handbrake, but when I try to talk about it to my intelligent but non-techniocally oriented wife,

I use a couple DVD rippers as well but HandBrake works really well just drag the disk on top of the HandBrake Icon and it will open the disk and select the main movie. I usually rip the DVD with MacDVDRipper (MDRP) and have Ripit as well. Both of those will work. If you use either of the Rippers then use VLC free video player without MP4ing them. I am 76 years old and I have no problem using them, your wife can too.

I use my 70 inch TV as a monitor because my eyesight is failing rapidly even though I had surgery on both of them.

Did I steal your line before you could rush in to try to put out another fire in the RDF?

We don't have a TV.

You can play NetFlix from your computer, just go to netflix.com and sign up.

If you are playing movies direct on a computer, you are right, you don’t need the Roku box. You can just go direct to the Amazon or Netflix site to watch movies.

“This is just FUD from Apple haters!!!

-the FR iCult”
*****************************************************************************************************
Jeez, like moths drawn to the light, Apple haters are irresistibly attracted to threads related to Apple. And, funny thing, these folks who are irresistibly drawn to Apple threads are now not insulting Apple users but instead are POSING as Apple fans attacking “Apple haters”. I guess Apple Derangement Syndrome has many manifestations.

Lol!

Like cultists drawn to the kool-aid the Apple klan assembles to smeer and attack this time an Apple employee for engaging in the unholy sin of speaking ill of the big fruit! Bishop Swordmaker has kindly suggested that you ignore everything he says and denounce him for his “sour grapes”.

Amen. And may the blessed light of Cook, hallowed be thy name, be upon you.

I updated my 4s. The latest update was the one that did the trick— it ran like a top. I gave it to my son (who’s on a budget) and bought a 6. My son says the 4s works great.
Did you try the cold reboot with the buttons? That solved my battery problem.

As a person who has only ever owned a PC as a personal computer, I can tell you that Apple software (which I used professionally) has always been first class, whether on a desktop, a PC, or my iPhones.

You drip animosity. More symptoms of MAPS. . . proof you are a sufferer. You don't need to comment on Apple threads, you know, VanDeKoik. It is obviously a compulsion for you. Just say "No" when you feel one coming on.

You don't even bother to read the article before you dive in with your bile. . . he has not been an Apple employee for many years, VanDeKoik. Your MAPS is showing. Everything about your posts demonstrate it. Ad Hominem attacks, false statements, hatred toward the users, insults toward me, your distortion of what I said in my post on the subject, and your irrational phobia is just dripping from you.

“You don’t even bother to read the article before you dive in with your bile”

LOL! I read it just fine.

The “he hasn’t been an employee for years” is just your sad attempt to brush off this person because you need something, ANYTHING to try to discredit a person that lodged a complaint at Apple, which is what you do all the time!

The only thing I did was just count down until you and the posse will show up to saturate this story to try to stomp down any negative statements about Apple.

” Your MAPS is showing. “

Is that like saying I need to “check my privilege” or that I’m a “homophobe”?

I dont even know what MAPS even means, and wont even waste my time figuring it out. I’m sure it’s just the latest stupidity from the Apple fans on FR to try to emulate leftists by concocting terms of derision for what I suppose you people see as people that committed blasphemy.

Which proves you don't even bother to read the posts I've sent to you. . . and you've responded to it before. Another falsehood. Here you go:

Swordmaker's and Kathy's proposed diagnosis for the new ICD-10 addenda:

90210 iOS Munchausen's Apple-Plexy Syndrome (MAPS), The overwhelming compulsion to post negative, judgmental, aggressive, and false commentary on any website thread related to Apple products wherever found, including phobic reaction to projected Apple user euphoria. First and subsequent encounters.

If you don’t mind, what capacity/model 4s do you have, and how much capacity did you have left after the install?

I can't answer that for you as it was not my 4s, but one of my doctor's 4s. . . and he had lots of apps on it. Sorry.
