Last weekend in Saanich, B.C., a 16-day old baby was mauled by her familys pit bull-Rottweiler mix on the same day as an elderly man was attacked by two pit bull dogs outside a Langley, B.C. dollar store

there are about three million pit bull type dogs in North America today, representing 6% of all breeds. But about 26 people die from pit bull type dogs in the U.S. every year (out of about 40 from all 400 breeds combined). Pit bull type dogs maul, maim, disfigure or dismember hundreds more. By no coincidence, when pit bulls were few in number 200,00 before 1970, most clustered in marginal districts dogbite-related fatalities in the general population were freakishly rare. In my youth, when middle-class neighbourhood dogs ran loose, and average families didnt own fighting dogs, years went by without a single fatality.

Are you certain that was a Labrador that attacked you? There are some Labrador like dogs that have quite different characteristics. My labrador is very very friendly and I could not conceive of him attacking.
It was a pair of Labs, and my point is that it doesn't depend on the particular breed. I was not attacked by a Lab - I was attacked by a pair of dogs acting in tandem. |

Ego and testosterone. Percentages of each vary.
LOL Good old, dearly departed Chet......*snort*
Yes, I see your point. A lot also depends on how the dog was socialized, the early years etc.
Worse, the instinct to attack was bred into their genes from the outset. Read up on the history of the breed.
The PB plague is another blessing that is disproportionally a gift from the blackamoors. Unsocialized fatherless male blackamoors think the breed reflects the mythical toughness and bravado they like to believe they possess. In fact the way they treat these dogs is how they have been treated in Darktown, like excrement. So there is a plague of vicious killer mutts unleashed on the larger society. These dangerous animals run loose and mount so many female dogs that the majority of shelter dogs are now at least significantly part PB. Just another gift from Da Hood to larger society along with Hip Hop and the general norming of gangsta life attitudes.
It is very likely that most people who condemn the breed have not.
It's more likely that most people have become informed enough, and well acquainted enough with the breed, to exercise extreme caution around them.
I had my first introduction to pit bulls in 1975, when one of them damn near killed my dog. He was so torn up, our vet just barely saved his life. Later, my mom kept two females that were so psychotic, it was dangerous for family to visit her. Even later, I was saved from being mauled by a pit bull by a small chain link fence and quick reaction time.
Along the way, I knew several people who had horrific experiences with the breed, and have since read countless stories about them attacking people and other animals with little or no provocation.
None of this is opinion - it's my own personal experience, which is backed up by statistics on dog bites/attacks.
"Extreme caution" is one thing. Visceral hatred and a desire to see the breed exterminated is quite another. It reminds me of how liberals view guns. To them ALL guns are bad. They are wrong of course...as are those who mistakenly believe all pits are bad.
As for your own "experiences", if you believe the hatred of the breed by the general public to be based on "experience" with them, you are sadly mistaken. Most people have never been around them just as most liberals who hate guns have never been around guns. But you are free to believe what you want just as are they.
Unlike a pit bull terrier, a gun can't just go off all by itself. The facts are the facts. The breed is responsible for far more than its fair share of maulings and deaths in this country. Sort of like a certain 'religion of peace' is, when it comes to terrorism.
You can ignore the statistics if you like, or you can grudgingly acknowledge them, while blaming it all on 'bad owners', but that's just a display of mindless emotionalism more appropriate for a liberal.
I don't condemn pit bull terriers any more than I condemn Bengal tigers, but I look at them both as dangerous breeds of animals that shouldn't be kept as pets by average citizens.
Glad to see the issue getting more press. It can save lives. There are people who are convinced by the pro pit lobby that the dogs’ reputation for bloodshed is all media hype etc. The statistics like “pit bull type dogs are six times more likely to kill humans than all other breeds combined” need to be known and shared. The pro pit lobby doesn’t care about the deaths/maimings but there are innocent people in the middle who are hearing that the pit reputation for maiming/killing is all just a bad rap and those people are the ones who think they are “helping” when they adopt a pit in an animal shelter.
Good quote from the article: “This is the first time in the history of human-animal relations that a movement has formed to promote denial of a beloved breeds well-known vices”
Okay this is a new low: “Canadian author and blogger Douglas Anthony Cooper is taking pit bull activism to a grotesque new level of hutzpah, having written a book, Galunker, ...about a winsome shelter pit bull, which actually peddles pit bulls to preschoolers.”
However, from my own experiences I know not all pits are like that. My dog Clem (short for Clementine) was as meek and peaceful as any dog I have seen as was her mother who belonged to my brother. I lived at the beach and Clem ran loose in the neighborhood for years, knew everyone and was well-liked by all. So when I see uninformed and/or moronic comments like "ban the breed" I draw the very valid comparison to how uninformed liberals condemn all guns and how grossly unfair and illogical it would be to do so. It truly is the liberal argument of the uninformed.
Uh, no.
“The legal definition of a pit bull is a class of dogs that includes the following breeds: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American bulldog1 and any other pure bred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs. Weight and shape can vary significantly amongst pit bulls, from 35 to 100 plus pounds. (Please see Disguise Breed Name to learn more about the deliberate renaming and mislabeling of pit bulls through history.)” for more, see following link: http://www.dogsbite.org/dangerous-dogs-pit-bull-faq.php
When you see stats like “pit bulls are 6 times more likely to kill” or that they kill more people than all other breeds combined, do you think to yourself, “Well, Clem never hurt me and I don’t care about anyone else....”?
The first responders who were in shock when they tried to add a little girl who had her face ripped off by a pit bull - does that just make you think, “Well it wasn’t Clem so I just don’t care....”
The military veteran pruning a tree in his yard - two pits jumped his fence and ripped his arms off - does this just make you think, “It’s a filthy lie! Clem was with me the whole time! Clem didn’t do it?”
Those of us who care about the killings are thinking about more than anecdotal information about specific dogs. We care when we watch a video of a pit bull, wagging it’s tail, running through an intersection, no barking as it runs up to a child and starts ripping the child apart (that’s still on youtube) even though it didn’t happen to us, personally. We care that a type of dog bred for fighting is being forced upon the public, allowed to cross breed at will, allowed out of yards and enclosures to go hunting people and pets etc....while certain elements of our society insist that their own pit bull didn’t do these things so we shouldn’t care about all the killings and maimings.
That’s the big disconnect here - we care about people and pets other than ourselves and our own pets, we look at what’s happening in society and point to serious failings. Compare that with the response from the pro pit lobby - at most they’ll post pictures of their dogs licking babies (even on a thread about a pit killing a baby) and insist their dog would lick you to death, and no the use of the word “death” in their response doesn’t repulse them as it does the concerned public. Owning a pit that hasn’t killed YET makes SOME pro pit people feel like UBER owners, like there is something special or masterful about them as dog owners instead of acknowledging they are just playing just Russian Roulette and they aren’t “speshul snowflake” dog owners.
Clem just doesn’t matter when the pit bull type of dog is killing/maiming at higher rates than all other types of dogs combined.
(Police have slightly different criteria for identification than journalists do, which explains the apparent discrepancy between the two charts.)
Hysteria bordering on the absurd.
Ill-trained dogs can be dangerous but well-behaved dogs are a joy to live with.
Pit bulls have more than their share of notoriety because some people want them for nothing more than pure aggression.
That’s not why people should get a dog.
