Word For The Day, Wednesday, December 24, 2014-- manger

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

[meyn-jer]

hear it pronounced

noun

1. a box or trough in a stable or barn from which horses or cattle eat.

2. Nautical.
1. a space at the bow of a ship, having a partition for confining water entering at the hawseholes until it can be drained.
2. a sunken bottom in a chain locker, covered by a grating and used to collect water from the anchor chain.

Origin: 1350-1400; Middle English < Middle French maingeure, derivative of mangier to eat < Latin mandūcāre to chew, eat.

manger in the Bible

(Luke 2:7, 12, 16), the name (Gr. phatne, rendered "stall" in Luke 13:15) given to the place where the infant Redeemer was laid. It seems to have been a stall or crib for feeding cattle. Stables and mangers in our modern sense were in ancient times unknown in the East. The word here properly denotes "the ledge or projection in the end of the room used as a stall on which the hay or other food of the animals of travellers was placed."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

In humble surroundings
the Christ Child was born
Mother Mary laid him to rest
in a manger which was blessed
as the cattle bowed their heads
giving thanks for their fodder.

Merry Christmas!

Thank you!

Here in the Northeast we have no snow
green green everywhere we go
‘tis raining today, tomorrow as well
but, we do not shovel rain, just run
between the drops.

I have seen that article many times. Its meaning grows in import with each passing year, particularly with the current Administration.

The Christ child in a manger
In a world full of danger
Angels appear
hovering near
Protecting our newborn savior.

French Toast Custard

In a buttered 13x9x2 inch pan place 10 or so thick slices of bread buttered on both sides.

In a large bowl mix well: 6 eggs, 4 cups Half and Half, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 Tblsp vanilla, 1 Tsp nutmeg. Pour over bread in pan.

Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar and refrigerate over night. Take out 1/2 hour before baking.

Bake for 55 minutes at 350 degrees or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Optional toppings: whipped cream, syrup, fresh fruit.
