NFL admits Ed Hochuli erred on key penalty against 49ers
Yahoo Sports ^ | Dec. 15, 2014 | Ben Rohrbach

On a third-and-5 early in the fourth quarter, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson couldn't connect with rookie wide receiver Paul Richardson, but a roughing the passer penalty against 49ers linebacker Nick Moody bailed out Seattle. Instead of kicking a field goal to remain ahead by one score, the defending Super Bowl champions received a first down and scored a touchdown to go up 17-7 two plays later.

It was a horrible call. Anyone watching the woosification of the NFL would agree that that was a legal hit.

I can say as a long time Niner fan and former season ticket holder, that if that call had not been made at this crucial juncture, then the Niners would have gone on to loose that game 10-7.

Wasn’t he involved in another horrible call just a couple of seasons ago?

I agree : It was a horrible call.

But as also a long-time Niners fan ( back to John Brodie and Ken Willard days at Kezar ) - Thank God he put them out of their misery.

All I heard today on sports talk radio was that bad call completely changed the momentum of the game and that it deflated and demoralized the 49’s.

Just put the QB and receivers in freaking dresses. They don’t even bother to enforce the “must make it back to the line of scrimmage” on the allowable intentional grounding.

I *DESPISE* SF but I NEVER like bad calls no matter which team they help or hurt.

And that was a doozy. One of the worst in NFL history.

A referee making a bad call???? Seriesly?!

Half the time the referees AND the commentators can’t even make the right call with the aid of slow-motion replay...

Pretty sure he was, and lost his shot at officiating the Super Bowl.

I am always being accused of whining, but NFL referees are terrible. A few years ago they had a strike (or lock out or whatever) and the NFL brought in replacements. Everyone bitched about the replacements, as if the regulars were good or something. One play in a game can change the outcome, and one bad call can make the same difference.

I think they should ditch the part time aspect of the refs, and make it a full-time profession. During the week, referees should meet at four or so designated spots, geographically distributed, and go over game film of what should and what should not be called.

I think there are around 120 plays in a football game, probably more if you think of kicks, etc.

So 'just a couple of thousand calls ago' Ed got another call wrong.

That's unintentionally hilarious.

As a Ravens fan, I am used to seeing calls as blatantly bad as that one go against my team every game. The league very obviously has favorites who consistently have calls go their way and goats who consistently get screwed over.

There are millions on the line each week. They should have done that a long time ago.

It was several seasons ago and it was in Denver. Jay Cutler was our quarterback, if you can believe that.

Cutler let the ball slip out of his hands winding up to pass. Hochuli ruled it an incomplete pass. Replay confirmed a fumble but the ball could not be awarded to San Diego because Hochuli blew a quick whistle.

Naturally, I thought the call was just fine.

Hochuli is one of the worst refs. Always seems flag happy. Refs should not be lawyers like he is. They should only call flagrant and very obvious penalties. Let the ticky tacky stuff slide and play the dang game like men.

Jimmy was a pretty cool guy when he played for the local Dolts, but I can’t stand to watch the antics of him or his bro on the sidelines these days.

This ref derailed the Patriots against the Packers three weeks ago. The calls against the Pats were so egregious that the network did not air replays.

There was a betting line on the first half that had the Pats scoring 14 and a half points. Everybody went over. Vegas was in trouble. Here comes Hoculi, a lawyer, to the rescue, again.

Exactly the same call in the Steelers vs. Falcons game, with the same outcome: the refs converted a sack that would have taken the Falcons out of field goal range into a red zone opportunity and essentially handed them the subsequent touchdown.

Luckily, it had no effect on the outcome of the game. What is happening to the NFL in the name of "player safety" is an atrocity.

It did. The fix was in. It was obvious. So why bother?
