Sony suspends film shoots after hackers hit payments
The Telegraph ^ | 12 Dec 2014 | Keith Perry

The attack by hackers suspected of having links with North Korea, has taken most of Sony Pictures’ computers offline and left it unable to process payments.

The Hollywood studio that made the James Bond and Spider-Man films has abandoned film shoots after hackers paralysed its computer network, and leaked four films and thousands of documents.

Agencies filming for Sony Pictures have cancelled shoots because the problems have left it unable to process payments, according to The Times.

The attack by Guardians of Peace, a hacking collective suspected of having links with North Korea, has taken most of Sony Pictures’ computers offline. North Korea has been linked to the hack because Sony’s forthcoming film The Interview involves a CIA plot to kill Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader.

Joseph Demarest, the assistant director of the FBI’s cyber-division, told a US Senate hearing that methods used by the hackers would have breached the defences of nine out of ten companies.

Security researchers said that the attack would cost Sony Pictures £64 million to put right.

This makes me LOL.

This company bribes government officials to circumvent the legal system and they get hammered hard by the hackers.

I call it karma!

Disney execs are watching these developments with keen interests amongst others, I’m sure. Imagine the perversions that will be revealed when their closet is emptied before the entire world.

The pirate bay case. They were caught paying money to people in a foreign government to raid a site that had the pirate bay servers in it. At the time there was no law against such in that country.

Of course nothing came of it because they bought their way out of it.

Remember this is the same company that instituted the rootkit protocol on CDs and DVDs which was an outright violation of a law they bribed (A.K.A. lobbied)the United States Congress to write and pass. And what did they get? A fine. No one went to jail.

Film studios are leftist breeding grounds. Couldn’t happen to nicer folks.

IIRC an NBA owner was forced to sell his team for the racist remarks and these Sony Execs are reported to have done the same things in emails.

Anyone wanna bet none of them lose their jobs?

As with the president and AG focusing on two - count them - two deceased persons in a nation of 320+ million, the government will now lavish attention and untold expenditures on a single company.

I’ve seen more than one post elsewhere that Sony were advised time and again to improve their IT setup and that it failed to meet even a minimal standard of security. They also did the trendy corporate thing of eliminating IT as a division and hiring in contractors with the usual diffusion of responsibility and, as demonstrated here, no accountability.

It’s literally a peek behind the curtain and while I tend to condemn conspiracy types, the hypocrisy and cynicism that we’ve seen to date is as bad or worse than most could have imagined.

What I loved best about this entire ordeal was the “damning”, confidential e-mails that were exposed; like Sony execs saying Angelina Joline had no freakin’ talent. LOL... Ya gotta love it.

this makes me LOL

It's particularly amusing that North Korea of all places could give Sony and its executives the Christmas present it probably deserves.

Forget that, these two execs Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin are big Democrat donors and here they are spewing racist crap back and forth which of course will be completely brushed under the rug in a day or two and the media will go right back to promoting phantom racism by the right.

Rush covered this a lot on Thurs and Fri. Some woman exec contacted The Justice Brothers to commence a “healing process” after she was found to have made jokes about Obastard probably liking Django Unchained. Rush said “Healing Process” is code for payoff. He expects the studio to produce a fawning biopic of Sharpton or Jackson.

So we have a pattern of Institutional Racism and Illegal Activities, where is Attorney General Kamala Harris?? Is she investigating this RACIST Company?? Has the Secretary of State revoked their Corporate Status for Institutional Racism?? Why Not?

They could take a small hit that while infuriating North Korea, would take away the incentive to hack them further.

The Interview’s budget was $44 million, making it a mid-range budget movie. Sony could write it off easily, by making the movie public domain. They could slash the amount of money in the write off by doing it after the opening weekend.

Scheduled to open Christmas Day, a seven day run would likely knock down their loss even to zero, given all its free publicity. Sony might even make some money on the deal. And if they wrote off the movie on Dec 31st, they would get the write off on their 2014 taxes.

That aside, it shows the power of the hackers and the vulnerability of a company when targeted by them.

This is an example of targeting is a very, very big way.

Jolie made her screen debut as a child alongside her father, Jon Voight, in Lookin' to Get Out (1982). Her film career began in earnest a decade later with the low-budget production Cyborg 2 (1993). Her first leading role in a major film was in the cyber-thriller Hackers (1995).

There is some irony for you.

At first Sony was unwilling to even confirm the emails were genuine, that was until one of the persons in the conversation stepped forward to say mea culpa.
