A former Catholic choir director who is gay filed a lawsuit Thursday after he was fired when he announced plans to marry his partner.
Colin Collette along with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Cook County Human Rights Commission filed the suit against Holy Family Parish and its pastor at the Rolling Meadows courthouse.
Collette claims he was fired over the summer from his position as the choir director at Holy Family parish in Inverness when he announced his engagement to his longtime partner.
It saddens me to have this integral part of my life taken away because I have chosen to enter into a marriage as is my right under Illinois law, he said.
It remains unclear if the states gay marriage law will impact the Catholic Church.
The courts will make that determination, said Collettes lawyer Kerry Lavelle. [Collette] is not yet married, he is moving towards that and he has that right under Illinois law.

Why would a church have a gay music director?
“Was this a choir director at a gay church, or a choir director who just happened to be gay?”
Ha! I definitely deserved that question! Sorry about that. He was the choir director at Obama’s church in Chicago. He was gay.
“Gay Music Director
Isn’t that redundant? “
I’m not sure. And I don’t even like show tunes.
He should be grateful that he only got fired .... other choir members have been killed for going public about their affairs!
Our music director is a married woman, children and grandchildren, all that. I’m the Spanish music director, and I’m a married woman.
Why was it even broadcast? They could’ve had a quiet simple ceremony at city hall, and this would not have been an issue
The church should really approach such people from the Latin use in English Common Law, as a “Communis Rix” (masculine), or “Communis Rixitrix” (feminine). Roughly, this means “public quarrelers”, the latter sometimes referred to as a “common (as in community) scold”.
The Catholic church has long recognized “rixosus” (being quarrelsome), as a feature of the divisive and disruptive, so what hope is there in holding such a viper to their bosom?
For an irate homosexual to sue the church because they will not change their doctrines to suit his perversity should be the final straw. He is so caught up in sin that there is no room for grace, nor is there are place in a congregation where he can sit without striving to harm the faithful.
Be done with him. Send him forth in the hope that he can lose his arrogance and disruptive behavior. Of course, if he can, he can return. Though it is unlikely.
If it saddens you so much, stop being a fag. You made the choice to be one; make the choice to NOT be one.
Famous last words. Who could have possibly seen marriage redefinition foisted upon state after state only 10 years ago?
These degenerates are jumping the gun a little on the First Amendment being nullified. Just a little, though.
This is not a performance, it is praising God. Personal opinion only but perhaps He would rather have the songs led by someone who loves Him even if that person lacks a Ph.D in musical theory.
Shame on this “church,” that allowed open, unrepentant sin to be flaunted in its midst unchallenged for so long. Everyone there knew of this evil relationship. It should have been dealt with many years ago. That it wasn’t created the implied understanding that it was okay.
There is a trend of opinion - has been for some time - that says that God is honored by skilled musical performance, even if the performers do not believe in God or share in the religion in meaningful ways.
My view has always been that if anyone doesn’t think the local volunteer music isn’t good enough, they’re welcome to take over and do better.
And here we go. Let's see if churches fall into the same category as bakers and photographers.
It’s easy to lie on interviews if someone asks you questions. Even if the Church interviewed him about being in good standing, he could lie and “come out” later.
“I’m sure there are exceptions, but it seems every church music director I’ve known has been gay.”
LOL
You have had some pretty bad luck picking churches.
Our music director isn’t gay.
But her husband is.
Had a tool vendor once that swapped their tool out for brand XX.
Bad thing is that her husband (ex) is a pastor now.
Apparently parishes have enough money to hire music directors who carry out the difficult task of deciding between Gather Us In and On Eagles Wings.
...don’t forget ‘Sing to the Mountains”...
