An Iranian photographer has captured the desperate lives of South Asian labourers who travel to Dubai in the hope of building a future for their families - but find only squalor, low wages and backbreaking work in stifling heat. Farhad Berahman's pictures were taken in Sonapur, the unofficial name for a work camp on the outskirts of Dubai, located far away from the luxury, soaring skyscrapers and vast wealth that the United Arab Emirates city is renowned for. 'Sonapur' - ironically, the name means 'City of Gold' in Hindi - is home to more than 150,000 workers, mostly from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China.

Qatar is a slave state as well as the world’s #1 financier of Islamic terrorists.
can’t provide at least decent housing
They don’t care to provide decent housing as they see Asians as inferior and treat them as livestock. The typical Asian that works in the ME is not muslim and therefore (according to muslims) not equal to them.
Not sure how a photo of a communal kitchen and south asian guys cooking fish heads is supposed to repel me.
I’ve lived in china, India and SE Asia. Those few photos didn’t show me anything that was worse than average living conditions in those places.
I’m not surprised that the press is surprised, after all they ignore the fact that they still deal in slave trade. These aren’t workers, they’re slaves. They don’t treat them well because they are expendable as they can replace them 10 fold at any time. They are probably lured there with great promises, but delivered what you see. That’s the way a lot of modern slavery goes on in these Middle East countries. The person luring them there gets paid handsomely though.
Muslims have been enslaving non-Muslims for some 3,500 years. For Muzzies it’s just normal.
These people don’t have union protection, the protection of labor and healthy safety laws and are treated as slaves.
They can’t leave and work for their Arab taskmasters for a mere pittance.
Foreign laborers in Qatar and UAE have no human rights and their lives can be taken away as readily as their freedom.
Lyle: “Come on, boys! The way you’re lollygaggin’ around here with them picks and them shovels, you’d think it was a hundert an’ twenty degrees. Can’t be more than a hundert an’ fourteen.”
Dude Islam is only 1400 years old.
3500 Years? Wow! Mohamad was only born in 570 AD - and there were already followers - just amazing ...
Something that might change your mind. They’ve been dumping raw sewage straight into the sea. Imagine paying the big bucks for a 5 star resort , going to the shore and being overwhelmed with stench.
Islam is only 1300 years old.
They bring in the workers ,then never pay them so they’re trapped . I saw a documentary a few`years ago about what they do to these poor devils
We know the deal here. Dubai is a Muslim country, and even though their lives of excess there rile even many fellow Muslims and western lefties, they will get a pass on their abuses because of their religion and the media’s reluctance to go after any Arab nation.
No outcry, pronouncements, resolutions, sanctions, etc. emanating from the all-caring, all-humane United Nations?
Especially since the UN has its collective sanctimonious noses continuously poking under every rock in the United States as they try to find violations of universal human rights across our country's fruited plain?

Get Texas A&M out of Qatar.
As compared to squalor, even lower wages and more backbreaking work in stifling heat in their home countries?
When we lived in Japan 1988-2002, I would hire a Filipino lady to come out about once a month to help my wife clean and organize our house. It was a great help with three active children.
The lady loved the modest wage we paid her and the respect with which we treated her and constantly asked if we could find similar gigs for her legion of friends who were working for rich expatriates.
I explained that we were middle class and didn't live much differently from our Japanese neighbors, but in her mind we were rich.
Union protection should not be the issue.
You could very well take photos of similar conditions here in the US. The workers in the photos are living much better or at least as well as their country of origin, or they wouldn’t be there. Illegal immigrants working the farms in the San Joaquin Valley in CA live in such conditions. In LA illegals live with 5 families in a 3 BR apt with basically no privacy. They could live in better conditions if they wanted, but then be able to send less money back to their country of origin.
Sure, unscrupulous employers take advantage of such a work force, but this problem is world wide and a long way from being dealt with realistically.
These people have food, a means to prepare it, and a place to sleep out of the weather. Much better conditions than war lord controlled turd world countries.
If folks don’t want conditions like these to occur, get real about what it would take to prevent them.
everyone not muslim is 2nd class, kaffir, lower than cattle.
