Nintendo's 'Captain Toad' Will Teach Boys To [Not] Be Men

For example, one thing I’m concerned about is the damsel in distress trope. In particular, it seems problematic that Princess Peach has been kidnapped in 12 out of 19 games in the Super Mario series

Why does that matter? Because it sends the wrong message to my sons (seven and nine years old). I don’t want to raise average men. I want to raise politically progressive individuals who are compassionate, tolerant, and patient. I want to make sure my boys are not beholden to, nor complicit in perpetuating, gender-normative (and/or hetero-normative) social constructions.

How dare men be taught to fight to save a woman! How sexist is it to ever think a woman may need help.

And folks wonder why people pull out cellphones when they see someone being attacked.

Odds are that same soilder grew up playing Super Mario Brothers.

And according to this dumb broad(man, whatever) it turned him into a politically non-progressive individual who isn't compassionate, tolerant, and patient and is complicit in perpetuating, gender-normative social constructions.

Basically the Author is Insane.

Forgive me. I understated the rancidity of the Doctorate in Social Justice. From its webpage, UMass lists elements to be studied on the way to being addressed as “doctor”:

“Element e. Socio-cultural and historical contexts for, and dynamics within and among the specific manifestations of oppression (adultism, religious oppression, ableism, classism, ethnocentrism, heterosexism, racism, sexism, transgender oppression) in educational and other social systems;”

“Element J: j. Social justice intervention strategies methods such as critical pedagogy, anti-bias education, popular education, youth empowerment, dialogue across differences, participatory action research, alliance building, collaboration, or advocacy.”

Sometimes children really are better off removed from their parents.

This guy sounds like a girl I work with who just had her first future progressive pajama boy. They chose a combination of the parents last name for the baby’s last name and I think they named the kid North.

At least he’ll be able to a lot of roads were named after him.

“How much you want to bet he has a high pitched, whiny voice?”

I more heard it in my head as a super-soft, breathy tenor in a too-slow cadence that would only serve to reassure me that his p*nis is as soft as his soto voce.

I don’t want to raise average men. ...Yeah, me either.

I want to raise politically progressive individuals who are compassionate, tolerant, and patient. ... These qualities are not mutually exclusive. One can be conservative, and still be compassionate, tolerant, etc. In fact, I'd argue that many of the "politically progressive" are some of the most intolerant, impatient people I can think of. But that's another discussion.

I want to make sure my boys are not beholden to, nor complicit in perpetuating, gender-normative (and/or hetero-normative) social constructions. ..... And that's where the author lost me.

Truly, this was an interesting look into the psyche of a liberal. A twisted, illogical exericise in foolishness and futility.

He wants to raise losers. My boys were raised with values that included an absolute responsibility to defend “damsels in distress”. They were also raised understanding their more general responsibility to defend anyone smaller, younger, weaker, or disabled who was being picked on. There are predators and bullies in the world. Given a choice between raising bystanders or even victims, or raising sheepdogs who would protect the sheep from wolves, I chose to raise sheepdogs - gender-normative, hetero-normative men who will not tolerate evil.

My kids have been in trouble at school for “fighting” twice. In both cases, they were officially suspended for fighting and then had the suspension cancelled and the discipline removed from their record. In both cases, my kids were stepping in to stop bullying that had crossed over the line. The spineless author’s parenting style would not produce the sort of real man who would or could physically stop that sort of behavior. If my kids turned out like this author hopes to raise his children, I would be disgusted with myself for failing in my most important duty.

“and I think they named the kid North.”

Tell her that everyone assumes he’s named for Oliver North.

He wants to raise metrosexuals or faggots. Perhaps Mario Brothers should have a nancy boy in distress to be rescued by a dyke.

I'll go back and catch the rest of your post - but I wanted to comment on this....

You are ABSOLUTELY correct in making the statement that your kids need to have absolute values. Couldn't be more right, in fact. I've done my best with WBill Jr. to teach him that there is such a thing as right and wrong, black and white, with no shades of grey.

Liberals, like this author, tend to get sucked into the gray areas. They twist themselves into pretzels trying to equivocate and find validity in all viewpoints. In (some few) cases, this is a worthwhile endeavor. In most, however, if a behavior is wrong, it's wrong, and no amount of justifying will make it right.

What poor, misguided sons will this limp noodle raise? I sincerely hope that they find a strong male role to emulate.

What’s funny about these guys is that you know, deep down, they’re simply espousing this twisted belief system in order to have access to sex with women of the same twisted belief system...

ironic, no?
