Marriages Have The Best Chance Of Surviving With This Age Difference
Business Insider ^ | 11/29/2014 | MEGAN GARBER, THE ATLANTIC

There are many predictors of the success of a marriage, among them the having of money, the having of children, and the length of time a couple spends dating before they tie the knot.

Another big predictor, though, is age: The closer a couple is when it comes to their respective birth years, the greater their chances of avoiding divorce.

That's according to a study that compiled polling data from more than 3,000 recently married and divorced Americans.

The study—the overall findings of which my colleague Olga Khazan highlighted last month—used a multivariate model to calculate the factors that seemed to best predict the marriage's chances of success. (Or, at any rate, its chances of not ending in divorce.) Its results were visualized by the data scientist Randy Olson, who created a series of charts to illustrate the study's findings.

Ten years age difference. Eighteen years married. She’s still waiting for the insurance bet to payoff.

I have a friend who says the key to wealth is one wife and one house at a time. Another say it’s never smart to be worth more dead than alive.

I generally followed that rule on #2 and #3.

That was from "Little Women" wasn't it? Some book I read back when I was a kid, anyway.

Mrs Afteguard is 13 months younger than me. We were married almost 46 years ago. Seems like yesterday.

Marriage could be great if women never learned to read or write engrish...

In fact, we should repeal the 19th amendment.

Weemen have certainly forgotten their place and indeed it’s just a shame....

Half your age plus seven years. The ideal female. Do the math. Works no matter the gentleman’s age.

I am about 2 1/2 years older than my wife; soon to be married 47 years.

We beat the odds, because we got hitched while both were teenagers.

I used to have a friend who believed, and in fact did start over with a new 18 year old bride, every ten years for 3 tries.

Another option I can fantacize would be two wives, both half my age.

Isn’t it a bit unnerving when you say to a gal: “Where have you been all my life?” and she responds: “Well, for the first half, I wasn’t born yet. I don’t know about the rest.” :=)

I was nearly 37 when I married my 24-year old wife nine years ago. Two sons later, still going strong.

One difference is I traveled outside of the United States to find a bride and met a lovely Russian-speaking Eastern Ukrainian. I wouldn't change a thing.

WOMAN’S PERFECT BREAKFAST

She’s sitting at the table with her gourmet coffee.

Her son is on the cover of the Wheaties box.

Her daughter is on the cover of Business Week.

Her boyfriend is on the cover of Playgirl.

And her husband is on the back of the milk carton.

Illegal use of the absolute value. Fifteen yard penalty (and try to tell me it doesn't matter which way I move the ball).

I would expect there to be a difference depending on whether the man is older or the woman is older. Is the 18% difference for 5 years 10% when the man is five years older and 26% when the woman is older? Or is it the other way around?

This statistic can be VERY misleading. Many of the marriages with a spread of more than ten years are the second and third marriages. People who have already divorced are more likely to divorce again.

For the record, I am more than a decade older than Mrs. Sivana, but this is our only marriage.

My wife is 26 1/2 years younger than I am. We’ve been happily married for almost 18 years - and have two children 9 and 7 years old. My only worry is not being there for her and our kids for another ten years. That’s the very large price younger spouses pay for marrying us older folks.

We do have a wonderful marriage, though.

Can’t be. It is well known that the age formula for a man’s ideal wife is: half your age + 7 years.

WOW! I nailed that formula. I was 31, she was 22.

So, if you are 40, you should be on the lookout for 27 year old women.

I married my 27 year old wife just a few months shy of my 40th birthday....

My husband is 13 years older. We’ve been married 35 years! I never got along with my peer group (boomers). When I wanted to get married and have babies they were all still goofing around. I think I chose well!
