Annie remake: casting of black lead provokes negative Twitter posts

Name: Annie.

Age: 11.

Appearance: Headstrong, smartass, black.

Hold on a minute. Annie's not black. She's a little blonde Swiss girl who lives in the mountains. That's Heidi, you idiot. Annie's the little red-headed girl who looks like Sideshow Bob.

But this new version of Annie doesn't look anything like Sideshow Bob. That's because in this remake she is being played by Oscar-nominated actor Quvenzhané Wallis.

It can’t be any worse than the first version. Of course, I hated the B’way show being a real Scrooge about kids and Dorothy Louden.

I saw that on Broadway, it was pretty good. But why they ever cast Diana Ross in the movie eludes me. It was the same with Oliva Newton John in grease. Sorry ladies, way too old. Esp. D. Ross. I mean how old is Dorothy? 12? 14? Maybe they should have remade the Wiz with this gal.

I think I saw part of the movie Annie, Carol Burnett as the bad housemother (whatever she was) was kind of freaking me out. She was quite terrifying as I recall and I think I turned it off.

Yeah, I was a grownup, but I’m quite easily frightened by movies. Ask me about Ursula from the Little Mermaid, or rather please don’t!

The 1970’s play Annie was meant to be a homage to FDR and liberalism. Director John Huston completely reworked the movie version.

In the play, the big finale is “There’s Going to be a New Deal for Christmas” this year. The lyrics cast FDR as Santa Claus, with the cabinet members as his reindeer.

Huston dropped the song altogether, and changed the holiday from Christmas to Independence Day.

“Dick Shawn, one of the few actors to literally die onstage.”

I did not know that. RIP. I’ll never forget “I gave my baby to the garbage man and he PUT my baby in the garbage can”.

I sing it often!

This is nothing new. Anyone remember the awful “Starship Troopers”? Heinlein’s hero Johnny Rico is Filipino in the book. Caspar Van Dien played the role in the movie with no explanation given. The horribly scarred teacher in “Pay It Forward” was black in the novel, but pointedly changed to white in the fil so explain the casting of Kevin Spacey in the role.

“I liked Denzel best in Death Wish.”

I gotta say I found him compelling in “Training Day”. When he makes the big speech about why you NEED to be corrupt, I was almost buying it. I was thinking, I’m just glad this guy isn’t talking to me in real life!

“Already been plenty of black gangster films”

That’s true. Some of them have been pretty good.

I too am waiting for Shaka Zulu played by a big white guy. And I wonder what that makes me.

I'm thinking Larry the Cable Guy.

I read the book “Starship Troopers”. When I saw the trailers for the movie I knew I could never watch it. Still Haven’t. I will also never watched “The Sum of All Fears”.
