Sin is ANY opposition to God.

Their is original sin and their is sin. We cure original sin by faith in Christ and are born again. Until then we can do nothing about our sin. After we are born again, Christ in us removes our daily trespasses.

Free will, my friend. True love is a choice. Even when we reject God due to our choices he continues to love us and invite us back.

Original sin, of course, is inherited. It is the rebellion of the first humans, passed along. It is thus also inherent. There is within man a tendency to rebel against God.

Sin is also ongoing. In general terms, it is an aversion to the God of the Bible.
In more specific terms, it is man’s assertion or posture, whether tacit or overt, that his ways and thoughts are higher, more enlightened, more sophisticated, than those of the God of the Bible.
You can fill in the blanks.

Nothing a person does can separate him from God.

Wrong:

Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:1-2)

God may hate the sin but God will forever love the sinner.

Wrong:

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10)

Church is not a rest home for saints. Church is a hospital for sinners.

But with the goal of making it being a holy temple unto the Lord.

That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:27)

Thus those overtaken in a fault are to be restored, yet impenitent manifest sinners are to be shunned.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. (Galatians 6:1)

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (Hebrews 12:1)

That's what i need to do daily.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)

But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person. (1 Corinthians 5:11-13)

Sin, strictly speaking, means missing the mark, "falling short." In the same way the commandment not to covet, traditionally "the last" commandment, puts all doubt aside as to a universal need for God's intervention, in the form of a substitute propitiation, in the form set forth by Isaiah in the 53rd Chapter of his prophesies absolutely necessary for our ultimate salvation to be possible.

In short, "all fall short of the glory of God," and are in need of the (now) finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross, to take part in his resurrection.

“Sin” has no meaning except in Christianity. What does a non-believer/atheist have to do with what sin is?

From Heinlein: The only sin is hurting other people unnecessarily. Hurting yourself is not sinful, just stupid.

It also means having a “mark” to miss. Faith without works is dead.

I think it was Abraham Lincoln who said, “My religion is that when I do good I feel good and when I do bad I feel bad.”

The only true source for a definition of sin is the Bible. Easily referenced nowadays............
