I Warned You About Bill Cosby in 2007

I Warned You About Bill Cosby in 2007 The public may be waking up to the mountain of rape allegations now, but women were coming forward years ago to warn the Jell-O Man was not so sweet.

In 2007—seven years before she publicly came forward—I spoke with Joan Tarshis, a former Hollywood publicist who claimed that Bill Cosby raped her. After our talk—and, of course, much more research—I filed a version of the following story on my website Hollywood, Interrupted. It identified a number of women who claimed that Bill Cosby had raped them. (The story has been updated slightly to reflect the allegations of the past few weeks, including Tarshis’s choice to drop the pseudonym she had elected to use in prior years.)

In my interviews with several of the women back then, I found the tale they told disturbingly similar: All were young and impressionable, beautiful, and talented. Cosby had taken a keen interest in their careers, and had offered to mentor them or otherwise open the fabled doors to the glistening kingdom of show business, for which he was a principal emissary.

All were given spiked drinks—or drugs misrepresented as medicine—and became incapacitated, the women charged. And all allegedly awoke with the unshakable sense that something wrong had occurred.

People magazine even ran an article on the lawsuits that were settled with several of the women, but never followed up on it. And from my own experience, I can confirm that the story shook people to the core: Even more than Woody Allen, Bill Cosby was a beloved figure and civil-rights pioneer; hardened editors were horrified at the prospect of taking him down. I might as well have pitched a story about Martin Luther King, Jr. philandering with white women. The story went nowhere.

Chill. I read one account and I found it utterly unbelievable. I haven’t invested any significant time doing anything on FR lately. I do think women - and any teen girl - ought to assume some responsibility for their own decisions. I don’t go into Harlem and shout the N word, in part because I never use the N word and in part because I don’t want to be beaten to death. I try to avoid being on the road at midnight on Friday & Saturday late at night - not because I’m drunk, but because others are. A few sensible precautions are needed in life. If you are a pretty 18 year old who wants to be/stay a virgin, going to a guy’s hotel room at night after he flew you across the country to join him is just damn stupid.

I also dislike ANYONE who starts making accusations 20-30 years after the fact. There is a reason why statutes of limitations exist...in Arizona, for example, sexual assault on someone 15 or older has a 7 year limit.

You read a single account and you are investing all this time and energy and wasting people’s time with all this arguing against something that you don’t even know anything about?

Bizarre.

So you choose to live in a fantasy that this is a vast, long running conspiracy.

Who runs the conspiracy?

“you are investing all this time and energy and wasting people’s time”

I’ve “invested” maybe 5 minutes. You disagree or don’t like what I wrote? Too damn bad. Skip it.

If you have a daughter, don’t let her travel the country with an actor and stay at his hotel. Unless you are as stupid as these teens and women and parents were...

yet the media refuses to do an expose on Bill Clinton and his womanizing.

It was useless. A DA says he thought Cosby was guilty, but lacked evidence. Lack of evidence is a pretty big obstacle to convicting someone, don’t you think? Or do you believe in Internet convictions...

wow, You are really over reacting to me saying “coincidence”.
I never said there was a conspiracy, I said I find it interesting.
Now settle down, go outside, relax.

So you are invested in overcoming any evidence of Cosby’s guilt over all these decades and accusers.

Cosby settled with this woman and does not include her in his denials, the DA believes that Cosby is guilty.

Did you work this hard to defend Bill Clinton on his 1978 rape of Juanita Broaddrick?

I was responding to you post 84 and your thinking that this is all a conspiracy, or as you describe it inaccurately, “”I find it interesting that every time BC says something remotely conservative theses allegation emerge.””.

That isn’t true so the theory is invalid.

Yeah.. and there was another, age 19 when she was supposedly raped.. after the purported first rape, went back to Cosby’s place a day or two afterward and “found herself in his bed” yet again.

I go into it with one FReeper yesterday who can’t seem to imagine the possibility at least some of these accusations have “bogus” written all over them. I find it rather odd that NONE of these “victims” filed a police report right after it supposedly occurred, so evidence could be gathered.

“So you are invested in overcoming any evidence of Cosby’s guilt over all these decades and accusers.”

Do you enjoy lying in public?

However...yes, I object to people bringing up charges long after the statute of limitations has run out. If you do not understand what a statute of limitation is or why it exists, please do some research and learn. It is a fundamental concept involving fairness in our society.

I think it is extremely likely the sex took place. I do not believe cries of rape coming from someone who keeps up a long term relationship with the rapist after the supposed rape.

How can it be a lie, we are still on this thread where you are doing just that.

Now you are claiming Statute of Limitations, again ignoring post 70 and post 73.

You really are working too hard on this, especially for a guy who claims to know nothing about it and having only read one account of one woman.

Did you work this hard to defend Bill Clinton on his 1978 rape of Juanita Broaddrick?

True. It appears the relationship very likely took place.

I wasn’t even aware he involved himself in that. I didn’t follow that fiasco very closely either. He slides even further down my estimation of him now.

Cosby was all over the Tawana Brawley claims, even offering a personal reward for her attackers.
