Why airfare keeps rising despite lower oil prices

U.S. airlines are saving tens of millions of dollars every week because of lower prices for jet fuel, their largest expense. So why don't they share some of the savings with passengers?

Simply put: Airlines have no compelling reason to offer any breaks. Planes are full. Investors want a payout. And new planes are on order.

In fact, fares are going higher. And those bag fees that airlines instituted in 2008 when fuel prices spiked aren’t going away either. …

Sailing to Hawaii is a little slow, I figured.

Well if you’d driven a DeSoto you’d have got more miles per galleon...

Southwest is always working the fares down to the dollar. If they are charging a certain amount that is what the market will bear.

They used to be the deal, but not any more with my comparisons.

My friend Tony bet me I couldn’t eat a galleon of ice cream. I sailed right through it. It was Tutsi Fruitsi ice cream.

In the first nine months of this year, U.S. carriers spent $10.2 billion on capital improvements, according to the industry’s trade and lobbying group, Airlines for America. That more than $1 billion a month, the highest pace since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Sanitizing planes against Ebola is probably fairly expensive.

Who in tarnation wants to fly, packed in like sardines on a sealed tub

Got 2M miles under my fat Polish butt. Flew always business class (upgrades). Now that I'm retired, back in steerage sucks.

So... I fly Alaska. Clean, new planes, leg room, bags arrive quickly after the flight and nice (attractive) flight attendants

I didn’t say they were the best deal. I said they measure the markets to find the best price point for the current market.

Ya, I used to fly a lot, then I got smart and made those lower down on the food chain to do all that BS.

Nowadays I wouldn’t fly anywhere even with a fully stocked complementary limo to the nasty airport.

Life is too short to be jammed in and stuck with rude skanky people, the twisted and sick, hotel bedbugs etc...

I was under the impression that airlines bought oil futures so when oil and gas prices drop, it takes longer for it to effect their costs.

I'm with you! My travel is now limited to once a year (family reasons). And after this last one (full body screen at SeaTac because I forgot to take my reading glasses off before screening), that may be my last.

Why would anyone want to go there now? NBC’s Today Show lead this morning’s show with the statement that freezing temperatures are expected in all 50 states. Those poor Hawaiians.

I remember that the pilot’s first words after the plane came to a stop were, “Well, that’s the end of my career.” Burbank Airport, coming through onto Hollywood Way.
