Student banned from criticizing gay ‘marriage’ in class at Jesuit college

A student at Marquette University, a Roman Catholic institution in Wisconsin run by the Jesuits, says his philosophy professor that he was not allowed to express his view against same-sex “marriage” in her classroom.

The student, speaking to The College Fix, said that MU philosophy instructor Cheryl Abbate told her “Theory of Ethics” class that "gay rights" was a settled issue because, unlike issues such as immigration, civil rights and the death penalty, “everybody agrees on this, and there is no need to discuss it.”

The student, who asked to remain anonymous, challenged Abbate, telling her he thought the issue deserved to be discussed, and that dismissing arguments against gay "marriage" and gay adoption because of her personal views set an inappropriate precedent for the class.

Abbate then told the student that “some opinions are not appropriate, such as racist opinions, sexist opinions.” When he insisted on his rights to free speech, he said Abbate told him he did not have “a right in this class to make homophobic comments.”

She then invited the student to drop the class, telling him, “In this class, homophobic comments, racist comments, will not be tolerated.”

The student said he filed a complaint with the associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Susanne Foster, who referred him to Nancy Snow, the philosophy department chair, but they not only failed to address his complaint, but warned him not to talk to Abbate in a “disrespectful manner.”

Most of them sold out long ago -— and I mean loo-o-o-ng ago, 1967 if you’ve been following the history -— . But there are about 10-15 colleges/universities that are still good, still Catholic.

With their resistance to critical thinking and/or free thinking, I don’t see how they get away with calling themselves universities.

Gay “marriage” is like global warming - “the science is settled”.

The teacher is an educated idiot. Look at her dissertation topic:

Cheryl Abbate is currently a doctoral student in the philosophy department at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is currently working on her dissertation titled, “Nonresponsible and Innocent Threats: the Search for Liability to Defensive Harm in Forced-Choice Situations” and plans to defend in May 2016.

Before attending Marquette University, Cheryl studied at Colorado State University, where she obtained her MA in philosophy. At CSU, Cheryl focused primarily on issues within applied ethics, specifically environmental ethics, feminist military ethics, and animal ethics. Bernard Rollin served as her primary thesis advisor, guiding Cheryl through her thesis work concerning the ethics of performing biomedical research on sentient beings.

Before attending CSU, Cheryl double majored in Philosophy and Business Management at the University of St Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Cheryl’s research interests are first and foremost Animal Ethics, including how Animal Ethics intersects with Animal Theology, Animal Minds, and Animal Consciousness. Cheryl also pursues research in military ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, ecofeminism, and feminist philosophy. Click here for a list of her publications.

I knew it was going to be at Marquette. My seriously unbeloved alma pater. That was where I learned that my 100% didn’t count because I was a girl.

Is denying a basic, provable fact allowable at Marquette?

That thar's the lawsuit.

LOL, she's writing a dissertation literally on how to justify lying in exactly the way she lied to this student.

Can't make this stuff up - a Ph.D. in how to lie.

Annual tuition $35,930/yr.

Parents should just vote with their feet. No need to pay that much when the public school down the street can give you the same bs for less.

I can’t figure is just how these so-called Catholic universities get away with calling themselves Catholic.

OK ... assuming you're acting in good faith, here ...

Let's suppose a hypothetical: You've just formulated a brown, sweet, caffeinated carbonated beverage, and you'd like to sell it. "Coca-Cola" seems like a wonderful name; it sort of describes the contents of your beverage. Comment, please, on the consequences of your hypothetical act of marketing your beverage as "Coca-Cola".

Not sure about her but the department chair Nancy Snow that the student was referred to when he lodged his complaint most certainly is! Just look at her: http://www.apaonlinecsw.org/home/woman_philosopher/nancyesnowseptember2013

Well, that’s not what liability means, but your point is well taken. This dissertation sounds like complete BS.
