California woman is charged with fraud after she 'uses injury photos from the Internet' to claim she was severely burned by McDonald's coffee

Selena Edwards, 38, of Victorville claimed she was burned on the hand by coffee from a McDonald's drive-through and was seeking $10,000 Photos submitted were taken from a hospital website, according to a state official investigating Edwards for fraud Edwards faces 21 counts of insurance fraud and workers' compensation fraud

It was a case that echoed another famous lawsuit against McDonald's 20 years ago, but investigators are claiming this one's a phony.

Selena Edwards, 38, of Victorville claimed that an unsecured lid on a cup of piping hot McDonald's coffee led to a spill that burned her right hand, providing photos to bolster a case in which she was seeking $10,000.

But state officials say her evidence was falsified, and the San Bernardino County district attorney has slapped Edwards with 21 felony counts of insurance fraud and workers' compensation fraud.

'We discovered that some of the photos were from a hospital website,' the state's Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones told the Los Angeles Times.

'We contacted her medical provider and discovered she hadn’t received any medical treatment.'

According to Jones, Edwards's insurance company had doubts about her injuries, leading them to refer her claims to state investigators.

I did the same thing claiming Russell Crowe broke my nose, but then they noticed it wasn’t my face in the photo. I thought I had figured out the perfect crime! Damn.

What an idiot. Everybody knows you’re supposed to use your own pics, photoshopped.

Years ago, I clerked (briefly) for a personal injury attorney. At the time, $10,000 was considered throw away money. If you sued for $10,000, the defendant's insurance company usually paid straight up. No need to litigate - it was a nuisance claim. It was cheaper to pay off the plaintiff then to step into court.

Good to see that the Insurance Defense firms (or their clients) are fighting back - even for such a "trivial" amount of money.

Odd how using someone else’s pic has consequences while using fake birth certificate doesn’t. ??

Little people can’t get away with crime, silly. Only our nobility and royalty can get away with.

Yes. We are not only “stupid” but dispensable. Such is the lot of the slaves in a dictatorship.

I’m guessing it’s because filing nuisance claims has become more tempting now, with the economy and all that.

No pics at the site. But I would laugh heartily if she used a man’s hand or someone of a different melanin content.
