As Chris Rock once surmised, Krispy Kreme is basically crack. The doughnuts, whether original glazed or stuffed with raspberry jelly, have had us hooked for 74 years, and were not looking to quit anytime soon. To better understand our dependency, we decided to look into the history of this doughnut empire. It involves pizza. And rap beef.

In college, my best friend and I would drive by the Krispy Kreme in Greenville, NC. When the hot doughnut sign was on, we would get a dozen, eating six each on the way to our dorm, passing a quart of skim milk between us.
Manna from Heaven!
Same here in my area. A KK opened and closed within a year. No big deal...other places sell donuts.
That's some remarkable restraint you show, ComputerGuy.
They’ll be gone by 9:00.
I’ts great to be skinny.
Admittedly, I’ve never set foot in a Krispy Kreme store, but I have to recommend Shipley’s donuts- they are all over the place in the Houston area (and apparently other cities- Wiki shows them as having 250 stores in five states). Made a point of taking the wife and kid to Shipleys on a recent weekend trip to Houston- naturally, they both loved it!
Just had Gibson’s Saturday!!!!!!!!!
Always a line out the door on a Sat. morning...not quite the line Bryant’s has but Bryant’s doesn’t sell donuts so I’m getting off topic here.
For a time back in the 80’s when I was living near Atlanta I worked for a company as a Field Engineer on a cellular system in Burlington, NC. Did lots of traveling back and forth between Atlanta and Burlington in those years. There’s a KK right off I-85 in the Greenville/Spartanburg area. You can see the “Hot Doughnuts” sign from the highway. It seemed like every time I went through there the hot doughnut sign was on. It was like the truck had a mind of it’s own....(I swear)......
On every corner is right. When I get up to East Syracuse, NY. right at the Carrier facility I can literally see two Duncan Donuts...one next door and one up the street at the traffic circle.
A few years ago, I noticed that the KK’s tasted differently. I axed why and was told (don’t remember exactly who told me but it was a local KK’er) that it was because they’d changed their formula to lessen or get rid of transfats. Never have liked them since.

My wife grew up in the deep south, where Krispie Kremes are the religion. To this day, if I want to score points with my sweetie, I stop by the Krispie Kreme when I go to Gainesville and buy a dozen to take home to her. They are gone within a couple of days. She still weighs 105 lbs, the same weight she was when I married her 40 years ago.
Boy, I hate that about her.... :-)
Shipley’s ran KKs ass out of Houston in no time.
My pregnant wife and I lived a few blocks from one of Shipley’s bakeries in Houston in the early 70s. Can’t tell you how many wee hour trips I made there.
Greased-soaked fried dough smothered with sugar glop?
Sounds tasty. NOT.
When I was single, I would swing by Krispy Kreme in the early hours, after a night out dancing, and get a jelly donut-—or sometimes a lemon one-—and a carton of milk.
I like to limit the carbs now, but a rare treat won’t kill anybody.
Great. Another food church lady all twisted up over his gospel.
I think the same thing. We had a KK store open here about 5 years ago and close down within a year. Hubby told me the other day they are gonna open another one in a different location. He loves them. Me? Meh.
Stopped at a K-K in Athens GA late one night when the Hot Light was on. They were in full production with the conveyor loaded with plain glazed slowly moving by. While ordering my two hot ones, I notice the conveyor was carrying the donuts all the way to the end of the line... where they fell into a big garbage can. No idea what they heck they were doing, but I convinced myself they were troubleshooting some problem with the system or training a new guy or something.
