Ross Richardson of Lake Ann said he uncovered the wrecks this summer in the waters around the small Island of Skillagalee, located between Beaver Island and the northern Lower Peninsula community of Cross Village, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/10KU6ac ) reported. An extensive reef system about four feet under the water was responsible for many shipwrecks in the area before advanced navigation.

He found four other wreck sites during his three trips to the island. Richardson believes one of his other discoveries, the largest of the Skillagalee wreck sites with the greatest amount of artifacts present, is the wreck of the 150-foot brig Julia Dean. The captain blamed the ship's 1855 sinking on Beaver Island pirates. The three other wrecks remain unidentified.

Reefs do not have to be coral.

Its why Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state.

Shoals and reefs everywhere.

The only coral that you would ever find in the Great Lakes area would be incased in rock and broken into stones as a result of the movements of the glaciers which formed the Lakes.

The basement rocks under Michigan are sedimentary rocks that were laid down by a saltwater lagoon a half billion years ago. I’ve found shark’s teeth on the Canadian shore of Lake Huron.

I don't recall the book having any religious references, but the time for the story would have been pre-Civil War. I read it in about the fifth or sixth grade from the school library.

The rivers and the Great Lakes in those days would have been the Wild West. Mark Twain's villains seemed to be interchangeably pirates, preachers, snake-oil salesmen, politicians, and such. Still about the same.

The article said reefs, not coral reefs. Coral can't grow in freshwater, but freshwater reefs can be formed by other means, such as tufa deposits.

Duh ... he was a break-off from the LDS Church. As in all of the LDS Church was in Utah defending themselves against the United States Government in the Utah Valley War!

Oh .... Sorry, you thought that this Country believed in Freedom of Religion?

I believe that Jesus Christ himself inspired that language in the Constitution; however, Satan is ever eager to snuff out the religion of the righteous. Your religion has never been under fire you say? Maybe, Satan isn’t that concerned about yours.

But if the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was on it, it would be a choral reef.

“Heh heh... Saugutuck, Mich... more like Sausagetuck. It’s the Providence of the North.”

No kidding! In about the late 70’s or very early 80’s I was walking through the park near the boat docks one night and came across a ‘couple’ getting hot and heavy, kissing and groping one another. When I realized it was 2 ‘men’, I nearly puked! It was my first experience seeing sodomites in person, and that imagery has remained with me to this day. What has been seen, cannot be un-seen. Saugatuck has only gotten worse through the decades, and as you implied, has become a magnet for sodomites and the rest of the crowd they draw, under the guise of an ‘art’ community. Havent been there in over 2 decades, but there used to be a nudist/artist community just down the Kalamazoo river just before it enters Lake Michigan, in what is revered to as the ‘oxbow’.
