This picture, the earliest known photograph to include a recognizable human form, was taken in Paris, France, in 1838 by Louis Daguerre. The human in question is standing in the bottom-left of the photograph, on the pavement by the curve in the road. He is having his boots shined.

Now why did you have to go and do that? It was looking like the start of a good weekend. Now it will be filled with bad dreams.

They must have had strong venting codes, look at the roofs.

Built pre-central heating, no doubt; multiple fireplaces or stoves in each building.

Sure, lots of stoves, but great venting and it appears to meet a code.

In 1838 my great-grandfather was 3 years old. I have a photograph of him, but it was taken much later, when he was an old man with a beard.

There is an interesting set of daugeuerreotypes of the Cincinnati riverfront in 1848 here.

The jury is still out on whether that is human.

I would have said it’s a drawing as well. Mainly because there’s not a soul on the other side of the street, or anywhere else. Odd for just two people to be on what looks like a main street in town.

The original article explains that because it took so long (7 minutes) for the exposure to finish, that many people who were undoubtedly in the scene at some point just didn’t make it to the final print.

NAH, She was just mummified in 1838. The picture was taken later.

The article says it was a fashionable area, but it looks utterly depressing to me. Hopefully it wasn’t so bad in person.

The black and white or sepia tones make it look that way. Convert that to bright colors and it won't seem so depressing.

What about the child’s face in the window of the house in the foreground. Top floor, left window? He’s closer to the camera. Gee, I hope Daguerre wasn’t a peeping tom.

Imagine 7 minutes to take a picture!

***
I really had never given this much thought until about 7-8 years ago. My sister and I were viewing a photograph in a brewery in upstate NY. The photo depicted ancestors of the brewer. It was a family in the picture — mother and father and about 6 kids. When my sister remarked on the fact that nobody was smiling, the bartender/descendant reminded her that everyone had to be still for about 10 minutes.

Yes, the advances in technology are just amazing.
