This picture, the earliest known photograph to include a recognizable human form, was taken in Paris, France, in 1838 by Louis Daguerre. The human in question is standing in the bottom-left of the photograph, on the pavement by the curve in the road. He is having his boots shined.

Both their souls were stolen.

The photographic technology was such that the lens had to be kept open for a few minutes to capture enough light. Even though this was one of the busiest streets at the time, the only person who happened to stay in one place long enough to be captured in the picture was the man getting his shoe shined—the shoe-shiner himself moved around enough in his spot to end up as a blur to the right of the stationary man.

From the article: The exposure time for the image was around seven minutes, and although the street would have been busy with traffic and pedestrians, it appears deserted. Everything moving was too fast to register on the plate.

Imagine 7 minutes to take a picture! Of course someday people will look back on our computers, cellphones and such and have similar comments.

So fascinating.

She was to the west, stomping down the hall to chastise the photographer for leaving the window open.

Wow a Kodak moment. Amazing to see France as it was many ages ago before the muzzies started to move in.
