I have a Benelli SN that I use for regular hunting/trap duties. Was thinking about a home defense shotgun. Would It make more sense to buy a different gun? M500? 870? or just buy a shorter barrel for the SN?
I also have 2 45s and a Marlin 30/30 and a Win 7mmMag but I think the wife would be more comfortable with an easy to use Shotgun...
I liked the 500, the Win spx was ok.. but the safety was too far. havent tried any others yet... just thought I would get some opinions... Mod the Benelli or new??
If you end up with the Remington 870, be aware that many buyers of the lower priced Express model in recent years have experienced failure-to-extract issues when using hulls with steel bases, due to rough chambers. You will know within a few boxes of shells if you have one of these problem guns. Remington is aware of the issue. You can either send the barrel back to Remington for chamber polishing or do it yourself with a brass brush wrapped in fine steel wool, chucked to an electric drill. A self-defense situation is not a time for your weapon to lock up on you.
Hawk 982 12 ga. sells for around $190.
What other firearms do you have that you’d like to tell the world about? Think opsec
She would probably be all right, especially if she’s able to handle a shotgun. I’m 5’3” and I don’t have any problems with it.
Besides, it’ll make her smile when she shoots it. :-)
I also have a couple 22s and an old maybe/maybe not working Muzzle Loader that my father built.
ok thanks, i think i will steer clear.. I just want it to be able to go bang when i NEED it to..
yes thats why I dont use the 45s or the 30/30. I could use the 45s myself... but want this to be something the wife could use should she ever have to.
Odds are the German Shep will take care of most threats, or at least alert us to them...
“Just wondering if its better to buy an extra barrel and stock for the Bene or just buy a different gun... not that I need any incentive to buy another gun ;)”
That extra barrel won’t do your wife much good if you are off hunting or trap shooting and she needs a shotgun.
My preference is Mossberg. Have 2 12’s and 1 20. Have a pistol grip 12 loaded with 2 1/4” ‘00’ for home defense. And it has a laser/light on it.
Opps, I misspoke...that was before my boating accident and lost them all!
Aha! It was YOU! YOUR boat rammed into MY boat causing my firearms to be deposited at the bottom of a very large, very deep lake!
I thought you looked familiar...
There are several companies that make AR-style adjustable stocks that fit various shotguns. I have one on a Mossberg 500. Works great. Pistol grip with an extendable stock.
There are literally thousands of accessories available allowing you to configure it any way you want. The barrel is easy to swap out and you can even get a fully rifled slug barrel with rifle sights turning it into a halfway decent short range big bore rifle. Plus it's still made with all steel receiver.
It's one thing to own and shoot a gun on the range. It's another thing to use it to shoot another human up close and personal, with little or no anticipation of self-recrimination oi legal after-effects.
Take George Zimmerman, for instance --
Shoot the dern thing at night and you will be blinded by the flash and deafened by the noise. Indoors, it is terrible. So you will not be seeing anything after the first shot. Either will he. Two blind, deaf guys jacked up on fear. Back up, and flip a light on.
Might as well throw in my 2 cents worth.
I’m an excitable kinda guy and left handed. so...
Being afraid of getting ‘buck fever’ in an actual time of need I opted for an automatic.
You’ve got to pump, not just an anemic pump but a real one to function the shotgun. In excitement or hurry I might not.
Also being left-handed I opted for a Mossberg. The safety in on the tang, ambidextrous. Right under your thumb, either hand.
My wife is much less gun savy than even me. Teaching her (or myself) to get pump action second nature? Not likely.
I bought a Mossberg 9200 over 10 yrs. ago. Short barrel, 5 shot, parkerized.
Finally got around to firing it last year. Ran like a top.
5 rules of a gun fight:
1) gun beats no gun
2) a hit beats a miss
3) fast beats slow
4) big beats small
5) more holes beat one hole
When selecting a defensive weapon you should imagine the DA holding it up in front of the jury at your murder trial and saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, look at State's Exhibit 1, the gun that the Defendant admits he used to kill the deceased..."
You want State's Exhibit 1 to look like grandpa's shotgun, and not like something out of Call of Duty: Urban Ops.
The Super Nova is a good gun, but I’ve found getting parts from Benelli problematic. I’d say the 500 in 20 gauge unless your wife is not sensitive to recoil. Plus the tang mounted safety is easy to operate.
Can’t cay anything bad about the 870 except the Express model doesn’t like that crappy Winchester Universal ammo.
Get a shorter barrel for home defense..
or a baseball bat
