A man delivering drywall to a New Jersey construction site was killed Monday when a tape measure fell 50 stories, striking him on the head, authorities said.
The 1-pound tape measure became dislodged from the belt of a worker on the 50th floor and struck construction equipment about 10 to 15 feet from the ground, according to Carly Baldwin, a spokeswoman for Jersey City's Department of Public Safety. It then ricocheted and struck Gary Anderson, 58, who had just stopped to speak with another worker who was in a pickup truck just before 9 a.m. in the city's downtown section.
Anderson, of Somerdale, N.J., was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly before 10 a.m.
Anderson was not wearing a hard hat, but had one in his truck at the time, according to the police report.

Why did the tape measure leave his belt? Did he have the proper training about securing his tools? Plaintiff attorneys are drooling, somewhere.

Someone could drop a second tape measure right now and take out about a dozen lawyers. Failure to wear his hard hat will undoubtedly turn into the employer’s fault.
I was working in bowling alley, cleaning carpets in pin changers, lever out carpets using crow bars.
My co-workers found me in machine after crowbar slipped, clocked me between the eyes, I was out for probably 20 minutes.
Could have been worse, just had bad bruise and headache for couple of days.
Thats why they wear helmets! He might have lived had he worn his hard hat—banged up alot—but alive.
Different breed of men. I used to work in shipyards a lot for the navy (not building, inspecting) and recall a time after work in a shipyard haunt where they had big, heavy ceramic mugs that you could buy and have incribed with your name. Then it would be left there for you to use whenever you came in. One guy, for no obvious reason, grabbed one off the bar and smashed it over another guys head. From the look of it many stitches were required. The guy who got hit stared for a moment in shock and then said "You broke my ----ing mug!" and the fists began to fly.
Some people don't need hard hats I guess.

Yep. Standing up in low headroom after working in a crouch for a while and forgetting...OUCH!
40 years ago I worked in manholes as a splicer.
You would be surprised what people would try and throw down
a manhole while driving by in a car.
Beer bottles were common - so you also had eye protection on
due to the shattering glass.
Strangest stuff happens on construction sites.
I was on the roof of the Con-Ed power plant on NYC’s West Side right off the Hudson River inspected roof work around new equipment framing. Had my hard hat on backwards kneeling under the steel when I heard this booming metalic thud and loud smack. Froze in place for a few seconds and after untorquing my sphincter, slowly pivoted keeping myself covered. About two feet behind was a fish about a foot and a half long. Rose and looked around, nobody on that huge roof but me. Figured a gull or hawk had dropped his lunch. Took a photo and included it my draft report for Con-Ed project mgr review, citing it as evidence that Con-Ed had some serious roof ponding problems. It got a double take. Never did identify the fish.
Sorry, but that is what cleans out the gene pool, stupidity. You NEVER go near a construction site without a hard hat. Too bad for the guy, but life is about shortcuts and choices. So is an early death!

When you drop something from height on a construction site, I believe you’re supposed to yell “HEADACHE” to alert those below. And, was the victim wearing his hardhat?

A 1/4 to 1/2 pound object falling at 32’/sec/sec is gonna have some kinetic energy built up by the time it impacts a skull 50 stories below.

I never wore my steel pot in Nam, and never wore a hard hat at work, unless someone really made me. Some people are good, and some are lucky.
