Assisted Suicide - Why Oppose It? [Assisted ZOT**Why Oppose it?]

Posted on 11/03/2014 6:36:33 PM PST by Sumner Worden

Hello, everyone. I'm new to Free Republic and I'm looking forward to the discussions.

There has been a good amount of coverage regarding Brittany Maynard's assisted suicide, and even more opinions thrown all over news websites and social media. After reading through a number of responses, I still didn't find the argument for the opposition of assisted suicide very clear. I understand that most Christians would be opposed to the act purely for religious reasons, but do those who oppose assisted suicide have any valid reasons without appealing to religious doctrine?

There are lots of “Remember when’s”. But if this is a college kid he won’t remember.

Sumner could be thinking: Oh, no, this was like stepping into a hive of bees. Everyone is on the attack.

Let’s give this student a chance. Maybe this student was merely asking a question, looking for feedback.

Methinks there is a young man here who probably knows a lot of Tae Kwon Do but is not expecting a spinning heel kick from a Viking Kitty.

The percentage of non-assisted suicides compared in ratio- by/of, the non-assisted posts of self absorbed jackanapes is well documented by Dr. Holden Dyck in his dissertation on “Is my anus, a time machine?”

Why are people making such a big deal of this? I for one am not interested in the fact she died. I am a Christian but taking ones life makes no difference to ones final abode. I hope she was born again but either way it is all over for her now. Why are you interested?

I'll give you a reasonably serious answer: if you attempt to form a philosophical basis for morality in the absence of religion, that road leads to nihilism. That's one of the more cogent things Friedrich Nietzsche said before they hauled him off to the rubber room. Do not dismiss it quite so easily.

And a less serious answer: that aside, I do have a list of people I'd be willing to help in an assisted suicide. Some of them don't know yet that they want to commit suicide, but they do, trust me, oh, yes they do... ;-)

” but do those who oppose assisted suicide have any valid reasons without appealing to religious doctrine?”

Yea Sumner I do.

I have a family member who died by way of suicide. It tears a hole in the rest of the family who survives.

I also recently lost a child I “spiritually adopted” to suicide. I’m still grieving for him.

I can’t say suicide ends the pain for the person who dies but I can say this, it sure has hell causes pain for those left behind.

It never goes away.

So there you have your answer.

I didnt say suicide was a sin..I’ll let God sort that out, thank you very much

Assisting.....anothers death is Murder: Thou Shalt Not Murder.

samson was acting to rid the area of PHILISTINES...likely under the inspiration of God..

Imagine the coercion potential with “helping” an elderly person to die while a fat inheritance TAX is waiting on the other side

Also, in this warped "Left is Right, Up is Down" society, it's not inconceivable that a Progressive gov't would offer estate tax relief for families whose loved ones are permitted to "die with dignity" …

I’m all for you committing suicide. It’s really not that hard. Why do you need any assistance from anyone?

I didnt say suicide was a sin.

You didn't, but it's a common assertion.

I’ll let God sort that out, thank you very much

*nod* — As will I.

Assisting.....another's death is Murder: Thou Shalt Not Murder.

I'm not sure of that assertion — it runs afoul of God giving Samson strength and thereby assisting with his suicide/revenge.

Samson was acting to rid the area of PHILISTINES...likely under the inspiration of God.

While I agree that Samson's killing of the Philistines wasn't murder (IIRC they were at war with the Israelites at the time), it doesn't negate the above fact.

God also gives states authority to punish criminals by putting them to death...and that is not murder
