On social media websites, how do you handle "friends" with completely different political viewpoints?
Suppose you want to keep in contact with family members. So you sign up for Facebook. Almost all of your "friends" are relatives. Some are Republicans, others Democrats. You love them all.
But your news feed shows their "likes" and their comments on many different issues. And some "friends" go to extremes, even using profanity and insulting conservatives.
Do you "like" the comments you agree with and ignore the ones you oppose? (This is what I've been doing so far.)
Or do you jump into every discussion and argue for your side on the issues?
Or do you pick and choose which discussions to jump into?
Or do you ignore your friend's "likes" and just "share" your own counter-"likes"?
Or do you simply "un-friend" the people who go so far to the left that they're obnoxious?
What do you do?
That’s a good one to always remember. It’s more food for thought.
I’m on FB, and I handle it by creating Lists, and posting political stuff to my Politics list, cat stuff to my Cat Friendly list, etc. Do a search on “creating lists on Facebook” and you’ll find instructions. I also Unfollow some old friends but don’t Unfriend them. Then their stupid crap doesn’t show up on my feed. I drop in on their home pages once a week or so, Like their grand kid pics, and ignore their raving posts. Works for me.
FR is the only “social media” is use.
Origin of Left & Right...
I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the “right” and Liberals are called the “left”.
By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible: Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV) - “The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.”
Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen.
I belong to two political groups on FB of friends and friends of friends.
They are private, by invitation only. Members are welcome to invite anyone; new members are welcome to stay and say anything, liberal or conservative, as long as it isn’t spammy, astroturfing, or so loud that others can’t have a conversation. The only other rule is that you don’t whine, because it is all politics, all the time, and no, we can’t all get along.
Most of us are conservative or libertarian. Liberals don’t seem to make it far without flaming out in a hissy fit. Maybe 5 out of several dozen have stayed over the years.
Some members live in the UK, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere. They are welcome to talk about our politics or their own. I have learned a ton about the politics of other nations this way. Members invite new members, not just the owners or moderators. If you invite someone, you vouch for them not being spammers or too off-the-wall.
I get all of my FB political needs met there. I don’t ever post politics to the main feed, and rarely comment on those who do. I am good at walking away and agreeing to disagree without name calling, and it works best if that is your philosophy.
Groups are free to start. Start one, invite a few kindred spirits, and have at it.
You assume correctly.
MB=Muslim Brotherhood
AQ=Al Qaida
This was back when ISIS was just a little goddess in Egypt.
And De Nile was just a river.
I understand FB holds on to your data for TEN YEARS after you disconnect.
Only a year to go!
Creating lists sounds like a good idea.
That's probably the smartest thing to do. :-)
Amen. :-)
Thanks for the advice!
FB keeps our data for 10 years???? Now that’s scary. Who knows what that data could be used for 10 years from now.
That’s what I have heard.
To make matters worse, the Ministry with which I am connected communicates through FB. My pastor has to contact me separately for everything because I refuse to re-up.
Yeah, it seems everyone is communicating nowadays via FB. I didn’t join FB until this year. I really did it to keep tabs on my sons. lol
I do love keeping up with relatives on FB, though, even though some of their political comments drive me crazy. lol
Some of my dearest relatives USED to have a lively email, letter, and phone relationship with me. Now that they are on FB, I never hear from them. It is kind of sad, actually.
If they post something obnoxious, I counter it.
if you FB members want to find some leftists to mess with try to join the “People’s Debate Page”.
Sorry to hear that.
I never kept in touch with extended family very often. Many of them are close with each other, but I would visit only once a year. With FB, I’m able to keep in touch more often.
I don’t mind political disagreements. I just don’t like when the conversations take a different turn and become insulting. lol Oh, well.
Can’t avoid it. My brother’s a bass player. lol
hey now!
:)
